IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The illustration displays the entire process of the production of fabric from bamboo plant.
Overall, the process consists of nine sequential steps beginning with plantation of bamboo, followed by separating the residual fibres and ending with the creation of different clothes from weaving the manufactured yarn.
Initially, bamboo plants are planted in spring before harvesting them in autumn season. Once harvested, the plants are cut into a number of strips which are then crushed to produce liquid pulp. After crusing, the resultant liquid pulp is filtered where long fibres is segregated from the liquid . These fibres undergo a softening process by the addition of water and amine oxide to produce a spin. The spin is used to make a yarn which is finally weave to make a fabric. These fabrics are then imported into the market for the production of different kinds of clothes which are sold such as shirts or socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. The overview clearly highlights the start (plantation of bamboo), middle stages (separating fibres), and the final output (clothing items). Key stages, such as cutting into strips, crushing into pulp, filtering, softening with amine oxide, spinning into yarn, and weaving, are accurately reported and sequenced without significant omission. While the description is slightly concise, it fully covers the visual data provided. According to the Band 7 descriptors, the student presents a clear overview with appropriately selected main features, ensuring the core information of the diagram is communicated effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. The writer makes effective use of sequential cohesive devices and transition markers, such as "Overall," "Initially," "Once harvested," and "After crusing," which guide the reader smoothly through the steps. Paragraphing is appropriately structured, separating the introduction/overview from the main body steps. Referencing is generally clear, though minor punctuation errors (such as missing spaces after commas, e.g., "Overall, the") slightly detract from the polish. Overall, the organization meets the criteria for Band 7, displaying a clear logical flow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to good range of vocabulary suited to a process diagram, using terms such as "sequential steps," "plantation," "residual fibres," "liquid pulp," and "amine oxide." Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable success, although there are a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as "crusing" instead of crushing, "spin" instead of strand or sliver, and "weave" instead of woven. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient for the task. This aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors, showing an adequate range with some attempts at less common phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating passive voice where appropriate for a process description (e.g., "bamboo plants are planted," "the plants are cut," "are filtered"). There are several grammatical slips and omissions, such as missing articles ("before harvesting them in autumn season"), agreement errors ("long fibres is segregated" instead of are segregated), and verb form errors ("is finally weave" instead of is finally woven). Punctuation and spacing issues also appear. However, the meaning remains clear throughout, and simple sentences are generally well-controlled, fitting the Band 6 descriptor profile.
