Overall Band Score: 5.5 · Cambridge IELTS 20 · 2026-09-29
IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Bamboo fabric is made in 9 steps. Bamboo plants are planted in Spring and harvested in Autumn. The plants are then cut into stripes. The stripes are crushed to make liquid pulp. Then they go thorugh filtering where long fibres are separated from liquid with a funnel. These fibres are then picked from the funnel and they are softened by a chemical reaction which is triggered with mixing them with water and amine oxide. Once these fibres have softened, they are spun to make yam. After that they go through a process of weaving to make fabric. This is the last step and the weaving can take place to make fabric of anything like shirt, sweater, socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response clearly identifies the main topic and tracks the overall nine-step manufacturing process of bamboo fabric from planting to the final product. Key stages such as harvesting, cutting into strips, crushing into pulp, filtering, softening with chemicals, spinning, and weaving are all mentioned, along with comparisons and descriptions of actions where relevant. However, the response has not met the mandatory word count, containing only 117 words instead of the minimum 150 words. This significantly impacts task completion as the overview is abbreviated and development is limited, capping the score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates a basic logical progression that follows the chronological order of the diagram, moving from step one through to the final step. Cohesive devices such as 'then', 'Once', and 'After that' are used to link the sequence of events together. However, paragraphing is absent as the entire response is written as a single block of text. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'they go thorugh filtering', which detracts from the overall flow and structural organisation.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a process, incorporating terms like 'harvested', 'pulp', 'chemical reaction', 'spun', and 'weaving'. There are, however, a few spelling and lexical errors, notably 'stripes' instead of 'strips', 'thorugh' instead of 'through', and 'yam' instead of 'yarn'. Additionally, vocabulary is somewhat repetitive in its sentence-starting structures. Despite these shortcomings, the choice of words is sufficient to communicate the main steps of the process to the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as passive voice constructions ('Bamboo fabric is made', 'The plants are then cut') and temporal clauses ('Once these fibres have softened'). There are several grammatical and mechanical inaccuracies, including spelling errors ('thorugh', 'yam') and punctuation oversights. While these errors are noticeable, they do not severely impede the overall communication of the process, allowing the reader to follow the sequential steps described in the diagram.
