Student answer (Band 5.0)

The diagram displays a process by which how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Overall, it is seemed that the process of bamboos making from how bamboo plants and how clothes are made from it.

Firstly, a plant of bamboo was planted in the field then passed from further process such as watering the field, spraying pesticides etc. When the bamboos were ripe it was harvested by an employees. After harvesting the bamboos it transferred to the cutting process and cut into stipes for further process. After cutting these stripes were crushed to make liquid pulp this liquid pulp was then filtered and long fibers from liquid is separated and remaining water was purified.

Additionally, add water and amine oxide in the remaining pulp to soften the fibers and spin to made yarns then this yarn was used to make fabric like clothes and socks etc. These fabrics were used by the individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to describe the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo, covering several key stages such as planting, harvesting, cutting into strips, crushing into liquid pulp, filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving. However, the explanation lacks clarity and misses several specific details shown in the diagram, such as the timing of the seasons (Spring and Autumn) and the chemical components like amine oxide. Furthermore, the overview is extremely weak and poorly formulated, stating 'Overall, it is seemed that the process of bamboos making...' which fails to adequately summarise the main trends or stages of the process. While the general sequence is outlined, the lack of a proper overview and underdeveloped descriptions place this response at Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay uses some basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'After harvesting', and 'Additionally' to signal progression through the stages. However, the organisation is severely hampered by poor paragraphing, grouping almost the entire response into a single massive paragraph. This makes the text difficult to follow and results in a lack of clear overall progression. Additionally, referencing is occasionally confusing, as seen in phrases like 'pass from further process' and ambiguous pronoun use regarding the pulp and fibres. The cohesive devices used are repetitive and mechanical rather than flexible, fitting the Band 5 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. Examples include 'bamboos making', 'stipes' instead of strips, 'pass from further process', and 'spin to made yarns'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary items like 'pesticides', 'pulp', and 'amine oxide', but these are often incorrectly integrated or spelled. The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, causing some difficulty for the reader due to awkward phrasing and word formation errors, which aligns with a Band 5 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple structures and faulty complex attempts. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies (e.g., mixing past and present tenses like 'was planted... it transferred... is separated'), missing articles, and awkward passive constructions such as 'it is seemed that the process'. Errors frequently cause strain and difficulty for the reader, particularly in sentences lacking proper subject-verb agreement or containing fragment structures. Control of punctuation and sentence boundaries is also weak. This performance corresponds to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
