IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The following diagram shows nine different steps of how bamboo fabric is manufactured from start to a final product.
Bamboo fabric is made after going through multiple steps and process. In the beginning, the tree is planted in spring which is then harvested in the autumn season. It is cut into strips and crushed to make pulp. Which is filtered and soften to make yarn that is weave to develop the finished product.
Bamboo plants grows from spring to autumn season. After that it is harvested and cut into long strips. Which are crushed to make a liquid pulp. The pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from the liquid.
Water and amine oxide a chemical that is added to long fibres to soften the fibres which is then spinned to make a yard that forms a shape of a ball. The yarn is weaved to make the fabric. Which is then turned into a final product like shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully covers all stages of the manufacturing process from planting bamboo to producing the final fabric items. The response provides a clear summary of the main features, noting the sequence from spring planting and autumn harvesting through to cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving. However, the overview is somewhat brief, and the student repeats certain details across the paragraphs rather than organizing the information progressively. While all primary steps from the visual prompt are mentioned, the development is slightly basic and lacks deeper integration of the chemical and mechanical processes depicted. For these reasons, the response meets the criteria for Band 6.0, as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some parts are slightly repetitive or under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text is organized into four paragraphs, beginning with a brief introduction followed by body paragraphs detailing the process. However, the logical progression is hindered by frequent structural fragmentation and repetitive statements. For instance, sentences are occasionally broken apart improperly, such as starting a sentence with 'Which is filtered...' or 'Which are crushed...'. Furthermore, cohesive devices are limited and sometimes mechanical or misused. Although paragraphing is attempted, the overall flow between sentences and paragraphs is disjointed, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The progression lacks seamless transitions between the agricultural phase and the industrial manufacturing steps, resulting in a Band 5.5 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary for the task, correctly using terms such as 'manufactured', 'harvested', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', 'fibres', and 'amine oxide'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary related to the process; however, there are notable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the overall quality, such as 'soften' instead of 'softened', 'spinned' instead of 'spun', and 'yard' instead of 'yarn'. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the reader can easily follow the description of the manufacturing steps. This performance aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors, reflecting an adequate range of vocabulary with some errors in word formation and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but it is marred by frequent grammatical errors and punctuation issues, particularly sentence fragments. Examples include starting clauses with 'Which' without an independent clause anchor, as seen in 'Which is filtered and soften to make yarn that is weave to develop the finished product.' There are also issues with verb forms and agreement, such as 'Bamboo plants grows' and 'fibre which is then spinned to make a yard'. The majority of sentences contain minor or moderate errors that require the reader to re-read occasionally. While complex structures are attempted, their execution is often faulty. Therefore, this warrants a Band 5.0.
