IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The image illustrates the procedure of how the bamboo fabric is made. It involves 9 major steps to make a shirt or sock using the fabric.
Overall, 9 crucial steps are involved in making a fabric using the bamboo, such as planting the bamboo, harvesting it, performing the cutting process, crushing the strips, using the filter, softening the fabric, making yarn, and in the end weaving to make fabric and then the clothes.
First of all, the bamboo needs to be planted in an appropriate season (1), such as spring. So it can be harvested during the autumn (2), then it is cut into strips using the saw blade (3) into crushed strips that are used to make the liquid pulp (4), an essential ingredient for the bamboo fabric. Now, a filter is used to separate the long fibres from liquid (5) that are soften in the next process by adding water and amine oxide (6).
In the final stages, it is spinned to make a yarn (7) and then weaved to make the fabric in the 8th step and finally in a form or cloth like a shirt or a socks (9).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. An overview is provided, noting the 9 crucial steps involved from planting to final clothing items. The progression of the process is accurately described, covering harvesting, cutting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving. While some details are slightly compressed, the response covers all parts well and presents a clear picture of the diagram. Minor omissions do not detract from the overall clarity, placing the task achievement securely at a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically and presents a clear overall progression from the initial planting stage down to the final garment production. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overall summary, middle steps, and final stages. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'First of all' and 'In the final stages'. However, some referencing and linking become slightly repetitive or mechanical, preventing a higher score. Overall, logical organisation and cohesion are maintained well throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suited to a process diagram, using terms such as 'procedure', 'crucial steps', 'liquid pulp', and 'amine oxide'. Less common lexical items are attempted with reasonable success, though there are some slight word-choice and morphological inaccuracies, such as using 'spinned' instead of 'spun' and 'weaved' instead of 'woven', as well as 'soften' instead of 'softened'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the process clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and passive constructions necessary for describing a manufacturing process ('the bamboo needs to be planted', 'a filter is used'). There are some grammatical errors present, such as punctuation issues ('and in the end weaving... and then the clothes') and tense or form slips ('that are soften'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences remain accurate, supporting a solid Band 6.0 performance.
