IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram represents the sequential production process of a bamboo fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, the production of bamboo fabric is a multi-stage process consisting of total 9 distinct steps that begins with planting bamboo and terminates with obtaining a frabic that can be used to weave clothes.
The process starts by growing bamboo plants in the Spring. In the Autumn, these plants are harvested. The harvested plants are cut into strips by cutting blades and are crushed using crushing machines to extract the liquid pulp. The extracted pulp is filtered out to separate long fibres from the liquid.
The long fibres obtained would now be softened by adding water and a chemical called amine oxide. The softened fibres are spinned to make yarn and later weaved to make the final fabric. This fabric is now used to make clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully outlines all the primary stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, moving logically from the initial planting and harvesting to the final making of clothes. The overview captures the multi-stage nature of the process accurately. However, there is a minor misinterpretation regarding the final steps in the text, where it states 'terminates with obtaining a frabic that can be used to weave clothes' and later 'This fabric is now used to make clothes,' whereas the diagram actually depicts weaving as step 8 and clothing production as step 9. Crucially, the response falls short of the 150-word minimum requirement, containing only 140 words. This results in a necessary penalty for under-length under the official marking guidelines.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. Information is logically grouped into paragraphs representing different phases of the sequence. Cohesive devices such as 'The process starts by', 'In the Autumn', and 'The extracted pulp' are used effectively to guide the reader through the steps. Paragraphing is handled appropriately, separating the introduction, overview, and body steps clearly. While referencing is generally straightforward, the slight confusion in sequence near the end ('weaved to make the final fabric. This fabric is now used to make clothes') slightly detracts from absolute clarity, but overall coherence remains reasonably strong.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student attempts a range of process-related vocabulary, including terms like 'sequential production process', 'harvested', 'crushing machines', 'extract', and 'amine oxide'. There are, however, a few noticeable lexical errors and misspellings, most notably 'frabic' instead of 'fabric' and the non-standard verb form 'spinned' instead of 'spun'. Despite these errors and occasional awkward word choices, the vocabulary used is adequate to convey the steps of the diagram clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('a frabic that can be used to weave clothes') and passive voice constructions ('these plants are harvested', 'are crushed'). There are several grammatical inaccuracies and awkward expressions, including 'consisting of total 9 distinct steps' (missing article, redundant word) and 'spinned to make yarn and later weaved' (incorrect irregular verb form). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they do not severely impede the overall communication of the process.
