IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the nine stages involved in producing bamboo fabric, from planting the bamboo to manufacturing finished clothing.
Overall, the process is linear and consists of nine stages, beginning with the cultivation of bamboo and ending with items such as T-shirts and socks. Most of the stages take place after harvesting and involve treating the bamboo to create fibres.
In the first stage, bamboo plants are planted in spring, and they are harvested in autumn. The bamboo is then cut into strips, which are crushed to form a liquid pulp. Next, this pulp is filtered so that the long fibres are separated from the liquid.
After that, water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres. Once they have been softened, the fibres are spun into yarn, which is then woven to make fabric. Finally, the fabric is turned into finished products, such as T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student successfully highlights all the main stages of the process, from planting bamboo to the creation of finished clothing items like T-shirts and socks. The overview correctly identifies that the process is linear and consists of nine stages. Key details such as cutting into strips, forming a liquid pulp, filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, spinning, and weaving are all accurately reported. However, a significant penalty must be applied due to the length requirement: the text contains 149 words, falling one word short of the 150-word minimum specified in the instructions. This slight under-length prevents the task achievement score from reaching higher bands despite the accuracy of the content.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is well-organised and demonstrates a clear logical progression from the beginning to the end of the manufacturing process. The student effectively uses sequencing language such as 'In the first stage', 'Next', 'After that', and 'Finally' to guide the reader smoothly through the nine steps. Paragraphing is used logically to separate the introduction, the overview, the initial processing steps, and the final manufacturing stages. Cohesive devices are handled naturally without being overly mechanical, ensuring that referencing between sentences remains clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The vocabulary used is appropriate and accurate for an academic process description. The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with terms such as 'cultivation', 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'finished products'. Word choices are precise, and collocations are generally natural, as seen in expressions like 'spun into yarn' and 'woven to make fabric'. Although there is an absence of highly sophisticated or uncommon lexical items, the vocabulary deployed is adequate and precise enough to convey all technical stages of the process clearly without communication errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The student successfully incorporates passive voice constructions, which are essential for describing processes, such as 'bamboo plants are planted', 'are cut into strips', and 'the fibres are spun into yarn'. Grammatical control is strong, with the majority of sentences being error-free. Punctuation is used correctly, and complex structures are integrated smoothly into the text without causing any ambiguity or impeding communication.
