IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The diagram explains the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo and it includes 9 steps.
To begin with, plant a bamboo plant in spring season then harvest in autumn season. After that, cut plant into strips. Then soften fibres by adding water and amine oxide. After that, seperate long fibres from liquid. After that crush the strips to make liquid pulp.
Moreover, then liquid pulp spin to make round yam. After that, weave the thread to make fabric and after that fabric is ready.
To conclude, by planting bamboo plant, the fabric is ready to wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student has failed to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, writing only 96 words. This severely limits the development of the response. While the student attempts to outline the process from planting to weaving, the description misses crucial details shown in the diagram, such as the exact ordering of filtering and softening steps (steps 5 and 6 are reversed in the text: the student writes about adding water and amine oxide before filtering, whereas the diagram shows filtering at step 5 and softening at step 6). Furthermore, the overview is extremely brief and lacks a clear summary of the main stages.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is structured into four very short paragraphs, attempting to follow a chronological sequence. However, the use of cohesive devices is repetitive and mechanical, heavily relying on 'To begin with', 'After that', and 'Then'. Paragraphing is poorly handled due to the extreme brevity of the response. The logical progression is somewhat disrupted by the incorrect sequencing of steps 5 and 6, making the flow difficult to follow in the middle of the process.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, such as 'plant', 'cut', 'make', and 'fabric'. There are also spelling errors ('seperate' instead of separate, 'yam' instead of yarn). The student attempts some process-related vocabulary like 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'fibres', but the overall range is extremely limited and inadequate for a Band 6. Word choice errors occasionally occur, reflecting a lack of flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences and imperative forms ('plant a bamboo plant', 'cut plant into strips'). There are noticeable grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('plant bamboo plant') and awkward phrasing ('then liquid pulp spin to make round yam'). Complex structures are absent, and the frequent errors in basic sentence construction restrict the score to Band 4.5.
