IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided diagram illustrates the process of fabric production by using bamboo.
Overall, it can be observed at a glance that there are 7-8 distinct stages in this procedure, beginning from cultivation of bamboo plants and culminating in forming cloths. Moreover, filtration appears to be most significant step in this method.
As the first step, the bamboo plants used for the fabric formation cultivated in the spring season. After that in the autumn, the mature plants are harvested by using traditional method of using knife. Then the strips are formed by cutting the bamboo by using mechanical method. These strips are crushed and as a result liquid pulp is formed, which is then filtered out to seperate long fibres and liquid.
In the subsequent stage, the the trapped long fibres are softened by treatment with water and amine oxide. These soft fibers then spun to make yarn. Finally, the product then passed through weaving process and converted into fabric which is then used for forming clothes, foot socks etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final products. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, noting the number of stages and the overall purpose of the process. Key features are accurately reported, such as harvesting in autumn, cutting into strips, crushing into liquid pulp, filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, spinning, and weaving. However, there are minor inaccuracies in the overview, stating there are '7-8 distinct stages' when the diagram clearly shows 9 numbered steps, and claiming filtration is the most significant step, which is subjective and not directly supported by the diagram. Overall, the content is well-selected and covers the entire linear-to-cyclical/multi-stage process accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall progression, guiding the reader logically through the sequential steps of the diagram. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate the introduction/overview from the body paragraphs detailing the process. Cohesive devices such as 'As the first step', 'After that', 'Then', 'which is then', 'In the subsequent stage', and 'Finally' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, though minor slips like 'the the trapped long fibres' affect the smoothness of the flow. Overall, the logical organization is clear throughout, placing it firmly in the Band 6.5 to 7 range.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing process-specific terms such as 'cultivation', 'harvested', 'liquid pulp', 'filtered', 'softened', 'spun', and 'weaving'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are slightly awkward or inaccurate, such as 'forming cloths' instead of 'clothing' or 'fabrics', and 'foot socks' instead of simply 'socks'. Spelling is generally good, but there is a spelling error in 'seperate' (should be 'separate'). Word formation errors like 'fibers then spun' (missing passive auxiliary 'are') also slightly detract from lexical precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including passive voice constructions necessary for describing a manufacturing process, such as 'are harvested', 'are crushed', and 'are softened'. However, there are several grammatical errors and omissions, particularly missing verbs and auxiliary words. For instance, 'the bamboo plants used for the fabric formation cultivated in the spring season' lacks a passive auxiliary ('are cultivated'). Another example is 'These soft fibers then spun to make yarn', which lacks 'are'. Additionally, there is a duplicated article in 'the the trapped long fibres'. These errors occasionally cause minor reader strain, though communication is never impeded.
