IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the information about the process of formation of fabric through bamboo.
Overall, there are nine steps which are used for the manufacturing of fabric. All the steps are interlinked with each other, omission of any step may halt the whole process.
After analysing, it can be clearly seen that in the first step, bamboo tress are planted in the spring season. In the next step, these tress are harvested in the autumn season, after that the bamboo sticks are broken into small pieces by cutting machine. Then, crushed strips are used to form liquid pulp. Afterwards, filteration process is done so that hard materials are thrown out and fine liquid is there.
The diagram further collates that both water and omine oxides are added which helps to soft the fibres. In the subsequent step, fibres are spinned to form yarn. After yarning, they are weaved to produce fine fabric. In the last step, finished products that is clothes are made to sell in the supermarkets and buyers buy them to wear daily.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, from planting to finished products. However, some parts of the process are under-developed or feature minor inaccuracies compared to the diagram. For instance, the description of step 5 ("filteration process is done so that hard materials are thrown out and fine liquid is there") is somewhat simplistic and colloquial. The overview provided in the second paragraph correctly identifies the total number of steps, but some details lack precise integration with the visual data. To reach a higher band, the response would need to extend and support all key features of the process more fully and precisely without relying on vague explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response achieves a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression that mirrors the sequential steps of the diagram. Paragraphing is used to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, representing a mix of Band 6 and Band 7 traits. Cohesive devices such as "In the next step", "Afterwards", and "In the subsequent step" are employed to guide the reader through the process, though referencing is occasionally mechanical ("All the steps are interlinked with each other, omission of any step may halt the whole process"). To fully secure higher band characteristics, the progression could feature a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive links rather than relying heavily on chronological sequence markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to manufacturing processes, such as "liquid pulp", "filteration", and "fibres". However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes ("tress" instead of trees, "filteration" instead of filtration, "omine" instead of amine, "spinned" instead of spun, "weaved" instead of woven), and awkward word choices or collocations ("soft the fibres", "yarning"). While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to this level. To improve, the student needs to pay closer attention to spelling and ensure correct word forms and collocations are used.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures appropriately for a process description, such as "bamboo tress are planted" and "fibres are spinned". There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles and minor structural awkwardness, but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The majority of simple sentences are clear, and complex attempts are generally understandable. To reach the next band, the student should aim to produce more error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over prepositions and article usage within academic contexts.
