IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram shows the process of fabric made by Bamboo. In this slide 9 different processes are presented that illustrates that how bamboo is converted into fabric.
Overall, production of fabric made from natural products.
In the first step the figure shows that in spring the plants of bamboo are produced. Then they are harvested in the autumn season and then they are cut down into strips. The fourth figure shows that those strips are crushed to make the liquid pulp.
After that the long fibers are seperated through the liquid with the help of a filter. Then some water and amine oxide were added to soften fibers. After this process the soften fiber is spinned to make the yam and then it is converted into the weave to make the fabric. Then in the final step the fabric that is of high quality is putted into the machines and process of making clothes is started. In the end the high quality products are filtered out from all the items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by outlining the stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, but the information is only partially developed. While the sequence is generally followed, some descriptions rely on unclear assumptions or inaccuracies not supported by the diagram, such as mentioning that 'high quality products are filtered out' at the end. An overview is attempted, but it is incomplete and lacks a clear summary of the primary stages or main trends in the process. To reach a higher band, the response needs to provide a fully developed overview and present all key features of the process more accurately without introducing details absent from the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text shows some basic organization with a clear division between an introduction, body details, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression linking the stages together smoothly. Cohesive devices are used repetitively or mechanically, with frequent reliance on sequential words like 'Then' and 'After that' to link sentences. Paragraphing is also underdeveloped, as the text is clumped into single-sentence blocks that do not group related steps together logically. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive ties, avoid repetitive sentence starters, and group information into coherent paragraphs that trace the progression of the process more effectively.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey the basic steps of the process. The student demonstrates an attempt to use less common vocabulary items such as 'harvested', 'crushed', and 'amine oxide', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling, including 'seperated', 'spinned', 'yam' (for yarn), and 'putted'. These errors and awkward collocations occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, ensure correct word formation and spelling, and use terms more precisely in the context of describing a manufacturing process.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response uses a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic active or passive constructions. Attempts at more complex sentences are frequently faulty, seen in awkward relative clauses or passive forms such as 'the process of fabric made by Bamboo' and 'the fabric that is of high quality is putted into the machines'. Frequent errors in verb tenses, prepositions, and articles are present throughout the text and can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must work on mastering basic grammatical accuracy, using consistent verb tenses for describing processes, and developing better control over complex sentence patterns.
