IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates how bamboo fabric is produced from bamboo.
Overall, it is clear that the production of bamboo fabric includes eight stages, beginning with planting bamboo and ending with production of fabric items such as clothing.
To begin with, the first step is to plant the bamboo plants in the spring season and after planting the bamboo plants the farmer now harvests the bamboo plants in the autumn season. Once the bamboo plants are harvested then they are cut into strips using a cutting machine. After this the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp and then it is filtered so that long fibres can be separated from liquid.
At this point, water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres so that they can be turned easily into yarn by spinning. This yarn is then woven to produce fabric. Finally, this fabric is used to produce finished clothing items, such as t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by outlining the main steps in the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to finished items. An appropriate overview is provided in the second paragraph, capturing the total number of stages and the overall progression. Key features are reported, such as harvesting in autumn, cutting into strips, and extracting long fibres. However, some parts of the process are described with a tendency towards mechanical listing rather than fully extended explanation. For example, steps like adding water and amine oxide or spinning into yarn are mentioned simply without expanding further on how these elements interconnect. To reach a higher level, the response would need to integrate the data more fluidly with a more comprehensive highlighting of key transitions and features across the whole process.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the initial agricultural stage through to the final manufactured products. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, separating the introduction, overview, and body steps appropriately. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'To begin with', 'After this', and 'Finally'. However, some cohesive links feel slightly repetitive or mechanical, particularly the frequent repetition of 'the bamboo plants' and simple connectors like 'and then'. Referencing is generally clear, but smoother transitional phrasing and a wider variety of cohesive tools would be required to elevate the organisational flow to the next standard.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic steps of the manufacturing process using relevant terms such as 'harvest', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', 'fibres', 'spin', and 'weave'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'amine oxide' taken directly from the diagram. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is noticeable repetition of basic words and phrases throughout the text, such as repeatedly using 'bamboo plants' rather than varying the terminology. Word choices are generally functional and do not impede communication, but they lack the flexibility and precision that characterise higher-band responses.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and temporal connectors effectively. There is evidence of good control over basic tense structures and present simple passive forms appropriate for a process diagram, such as 'are cut into strips' and 'are separated'. Some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings are present, such as 'turned easily into yarn' rather than 'easily turned into yarn', but these errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication. To achieve a higher level, the student would need to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures consistently with greater accuracy throughout the text.
