IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates how bamboo fabric is produced from bamboo.

Overall, it is clear that the production of bamboo fabric includes eight stages, beginning with planting bamboo and ending with production of fabric items such as clothing.

To begin with, the first step is to plant the bamboo plants in the spring season and after planting the bamboo plants the farmer harvests the bamboo plants in the autumn season. Once the bamboo plants are harvested they are cut into strips using a cutting machine. After this the strips are crushed to make liquid pulp and then it is filtered so that long fibres can be separated from the liquid.

At this point, water and amine oxide are added to soften the fibres so that they can be turned easily into yarn by spinning. This yarn is then woven to produce fabric. Finally, this fabric is used to produce finished clothing items, such as t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the key stages of the process diagram, from planting bamboo in the spring to producing finished clothing items such as t-shirts and socks. The overview is clear and accurately states the total number of stages and the overall progression. However, certain parts of the response are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of how the pulp is filtered and how water and amine oxide are mixed in could be extended to highlight more specific relationships shown in the diagram. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that all steps are elaborated with equal depth and precision, fully detailing the transformation processes rather than relying on brief summaries.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The relationship between sentences and paragraphs is well maintained using appropriate cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Once', 'After this', and 'Finally'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, the initial harvesting and processing stages, and the final manufacturing steps. Referencing is generally clear and easy to follow. To move further up the band, the student could incorporate a wider variety of more sophisticated referencing and substitution techniques to make the flow of information even more seamless and less reliant on standard transition markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the sequence of manufacturing steps with terms like 'harvest', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', 'fibres', and 'woven'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though word choices occasionally lack precision or display slight repetition, such as the repeated use of 'bamboo plants'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate and do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate a broader range of precise, task-specific lexical items and collocation variations, demonstrating greater flexibility and control over less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a reasonable mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using passive constructions appropriately for a process description, such as 'are cut into strips' and 'are softened'. There are some grammatical structures used accurately, but occasional minor errors or awkward phrasings persist, such as 'turned easily into yarn by spinning'. Punctuation is generally functional, allowing the reader to follow the text without difficulty. To reach the next level, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures with greater frequency and ensure that all complex clauses are executed with complete accuracy and control.
