IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the process of producing bamboo fabric, from planting bamboo to manufacturing finished clothing.

Overall, there are nine main stages, beginning with the cultivation of bamboo in spring and ending with the production of clothes. The process involves harvesting, mechanical processing, filtering and treating the fibres before they are converted into fabric.

First, bamboo plants are grown in spring and harvested in autumn. The harvested bamboo is then cut into small strips, which are crushed to produce a liquid pulp. Next, this pulp is filtered to separate the long fibres from the liquid. The resulting fibres are then softened by adding water and amine oxide.

In the next stage, the softened fibres are spun into yarn. This yarn is subsequently woven to produce bamboo fabric. Finally, the finished fabric is used to manufacture clothing items, such as shirts and socks. Thus, bamboo undergoes several processing stages before it is transformed into usable fabric and garments.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the visual diagram, presenting a clear overview and outlining all nine main stages from the initial cultivation of bamboo to the production of finished garments. The progression is accurately reported, with appropriate mentions of key processes such as cutting into strips, crushing into liquid pulp, filtering, and softening with water and amine oxide. The information is well-selected, and the main features are highlighted logically without unnecessary clutter. To achieve a higher level, the response could incorporate more precise comparative details or elaborate slightly more on the physical transformations occurring at specific transitional points, such as the chemical additions during the softening phase.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the entire text. It opens with an effective introductory paragraph and a comprehensive overview statement that encapsulates the whole manufacturing cycle. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introductory summary, the initial preparation and processing stages, and the final spinning, weaving, and clothing production. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Next', 'In the next stage', and 'Finally' are employed flexibly to guide the reader smoothly through the sequence of events without feeling overly mechanical or repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision for this task type. Less common items and process-specific terminology such as 'cultivation', 'mechanical processing', 'liquid pulp', and 'amine oxide' are used appropriately and demonstrate an awareness of style and collocation. Word choices are generally accurate throughout the response, allowing the reader to follow the technical steps of bamboo fabric manufacturing easily. Occasional reliance on straightforward vocabulary keeps the resource at a competent level, and to push higher, the student could integrate more sophisticated synonyms like 'subsequently transformed' or 'pivotal chemical treatment'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures and maintains a high proportion of error-free sentences. The passive voice, which is essential for describing manufacturing processes objectively, is handled with consistent accuracy, seen in structures like 'bamboo plants are grown', 'is then cut into small strips', and 'the softened fibres are spun'. Verb forms, tenses, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns are well controlled, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. The occasional persistence of minor structural limitations prevents it from reaching the highest band, but overall grammatical control remains strong and secure.
