IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The flow chart gives information about how fabric is made in nine steps from bamboo trees to a proper cloth.

Beginning of the process, The farmer plants bamboo root in Sprong because this is the best season to plant bamboo. After this period, In Autumn, The farmer cut down all the tree to go next step. However, then all the bamboo go through the strips to cut it for the next step.

To make a proper fabric the 4th step is crush, Where all the strips crushed by machine to make liquid pulp. In the meantime, the Filter step, where all the long fibers are separated from the liquid and this step is most significant. Then, there have to add suitable Water and Amine Oxide which is mendatory for making fabrics.

Furthermore all the soft Fibers go through Spin to make Yam.Lastly, There is a final step which is Weave, basically to make Fabric. Finally, A proper ready cloth is for us to wear to fulfill the whole process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While it outlines the overall sequence of the diagram from planting bamboo to finished clothing, several stages are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the description of cutting the bamboo mentions that 'all the bamboo go through the strips to cut it', which lacks clarity and misinterprets the sequential actions shown in the visual data. Furthermore, the selection of main features lacks precision, as certain steps like the filtering process are given subjective prominence ('this step is most significant') rather than a purely objective summary. To reach a higher band, the response would need to cover all parts of the process clearly and accurately, presenting a more balanced and fully developed overview without mechanical narrative phrasing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with paragraphs attempting to group the stages of the process, but there is no clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Beginning of the process, The farmer...' and 'Furthermore all the soft Fibers...', which fails to establish a smooth and logical flow between sentences. Referencing is also weak, with pronouns and transitional phrases feeling disjointed. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty and repetitive. To improve, the writer should use a wider and more accurate range of linking words and ensure that each step transitions naturally into the next to guide the reader effectively through the process diagram.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'proper cloth', 'Sprong' (spelling error), 'Yam' instead of yarn, and 'mendatory' instead of mandatory. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'significant', 'soften', and 'crush', but inaccurate word forms and spelling slips (e.g., 'Fibers', 'Fibers go through Spin') cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary needs to be more precise, demonstrating correct spelling, appropriate collocations for a manufacturing process, and a wider variety of technical terms related to textile production.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors when attempting more complex patterns. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles or prepositions, such as 'The farmer cut down all the tree', 'Where all the strips crushed by machine', and 'there have to add suitable Water'. Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic throughout the text, with misplaced commas and capital letters in the middle of sentences (e.g., 'In Autumn, The farmer...'). These frequent errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of basic grammatical forms.
