IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The process illustrates how bamboo fabric is made for everyday clothing items.

Overall, the process consists of various stages which starts with plantation and end on weaving the fabric.

Firstly, plantation of a bamboo takes place at first step which later on lead to harvesting in autumn season by the human labour. The diagram shows a person wearing a hat manually cutting the grown bamboo. Subsequently, they cutted the strips into small pieces using a machine with a circular saw, following that crushed the strips to make a liquid pulp. However, in the next stage filteration process takes place to seprate long fibres from liquid using a funnel-shaped filter.

Once the filteration is done, the next step is to soften the fibres by adding water and amine oxide. Following that spin the threads to make a yarn that is rolled into a ball. Finally, by weaving a fabric from a yarn it can make the final product, such as t-shirts and socks, ready for people to wear.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, satisfying the core requirements of Task 1. The overview correctly identifies that the process begins with planting and ends with weaving finished products like t-shirts and socks. All key steps are reported in logical sequence, from harvesting and cutting strips to crushing, filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving. However, the response leans slightly towards the lower end of its band because certain parts of the information are under-developed or rely too heavily on minor visual details rather than the core industrial process itself, such as describing the worker wearing a hat or mentioning the shape of the funnel. To reach the next level, the description should maintain a purely objective reporting style, focusing entirely on the main mechanical and chemical changes without drifting into descriptive commentary on the illustrations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. It is divided appropriately into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that follow the chronological flow of the diagram. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Subsequently', 'following that', and 'Finally' are used to guide the reader smoothly through the steps. Paragraphing is managed effectively to separate the initial stages from the subsequent manufacturing processes. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than fully integrated, which prevents the writing from achieving a higher band. Furthermore, referencing could be slightly tighter in places. To improve further, the writer should aim for a more sophisticated variety of cohesive links and ensure that transition phrases blend naturally into the sentence structures.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'plantation', 'harvesting', 'liquid pulp', 'filteration', and 'amine oxide'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word formation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'plantation' is misused to refer to the action of planting ('plantation of a bamboo takes place'), 'filteration' contains a spelling error, and terms like 'seprate' are misspelled. The vocabulary is generally sufficient to communicate the main points, but these lexical slips and occasional awkward collocations indicate a lack of precision. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their control over less common technical terminology and ensure absolute accuracy in spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and temporal transition phrases. There are, however, several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward constructions that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'which starts with plantation and end on weaving', 'which later on lead to harvesting', and the dangling participle in 'following that crushed the strips'. Additionally, the past tense form 'cutted' is incorrect. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, their frequency means that error-free sentences are not dominant enough to secure a higher band. To improve, the writer must focus on verb form accuracy, correct past tense inflections, and maintaining tighter control over complex sentence clauses.
