IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The disgram shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Overall, the nine stages of process cover the complete procedure for manufacturing fabric. The whole process starts with bamboo plants spring and it ends at the stage of weave after spin which is used to make yarm.
The process of manufacturing begins with the growth of bamboo plants in the fields. In autumn, farmers harvest the bamboo crops for sale. The bamboo plants then cut into strips by using cutter and the fourth step is to crush strips for making liquid pulp. The filter is used to separete long fibres from liquid. The fibers are softening by adding water and amine oxide into it. The process passes from seven stage where soften fibers are spining to make yam. Then spined yam is used to make weave for making fabric. The process of manufacturing consists almost nine steps, so the last stage is to make garments and other clothes used for winter seasons.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the process diagram, attempting to summarize the sequence from planting bamboo to manufacturing fabric and garments. However, it only partially addresses all parts of the prompt because some steps are under-developed or missing clear descriptive detail, and the overview lacks precision. For instance, the second paragraph mentions that the last stage is to make garments, but this is described in a limited and somewhat repetitive manner. While the overall progression is generally followed, ideas are restricted by simple reporting rather than fully integrated comparisons or clear highlighting of key stages. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide a more comprehensive overview of the entire manufacturing cycle and ensure all mechanical steps are reported with greater clarity and depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical sequence following the stages of the diagram from start to finish. Paragraphing is attempted, with an introductory paragraph separating the overview from the main body details. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For example, transition phrases like 'Then spined yam is used to make weave' create awkward connections, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift into discussing winter season clothes at the end without proper signposting. To improve Coherence and Cohesion, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices to link steps smoothly, ensuring that relationships between the chemical and mechanical stages of production are logically signalled throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'harvest', 'liquid pulp', 'fibres', and 'fabric'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'disgram' instead of diagram, 'yarm' or 'yam' instead of yarn, 'separete' instead of separate, and 'softening' instead of softened. These word-choice and spelling errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited lexical control. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their working vocabulary, eliminate spelling mistakes in key terminology, and demonstrate better precision in word forms and collocations when describing industrial processes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The process of manufacturing begins with the growth of bamboo plants in the fields.' However, control over grammar is limited, featuring frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are issues with active and passive voice constructions, such as 'The bamboo plants then cut into strips' (missing auxiliary 'are') and 'The fibers are softening by adding water' (incorrect participle form). Other errors include article misuse and subject-verb agreement problems, like 'The process passes from seven stage where soften fibers are spining'. To progress, the student needs to improve their command of complex structures, particularly passive voice forms which are essential for describing manufacturing processes accurately.
