IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrates the complete process of how the bamboo fabric is transformed from raw material into well-made clothing essentials.

The bamboo plantation is initiated in spring's season, while the cultivation of the crops takes place in autumn season. The manufacturing process starts once the the crops are harvested from the feilds. The raw material is gathered and splitted into strips using a machine that cuts the bamboo into thin strips. To soften the bamboo, they are treated with water and amino oxides which results in a mixture of long fibers and liquid. The filteration process seperates the long fibers from the liquid. Then the fibers strips are crushed to extract the liquid pulp from it.

Once the liquid pulp is collected, it is spinned in a machine which transforms the pulp into yam. Then, threads yam are weaved together that results in the production of a fabric that can be used in the manufacturing of the clothes and other objects. The weaving of these yams takes place at large scale to generate huge patches of clothes. These huge patches are cut into smaller pieces to turn them into clothes, socks, jackets, dresses and more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response covers some parts of the task, but contains significant inaccuracies in the sequencing and representation of the process. For example, the student states that the bamboo is treated with chemicals to soften it before filtering, but then claims that the fibers are crushed afterwards to extract liquid pulp, which reverses and confuses the actual sequence shown in the diagram. Furthermore, some stages are described with repetitive or slightly inaccurate details, such as mentioning the harvesting and planting seasons in a way that introduces extraneous information not central to the transformation process. Ideas are limited and under-developed, reflecting a partial and somewhat confused understanding of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to group information into introduction, body, and conclusion-like paragraphs. The progression of the text generally flows from beginning to end, supported by sequencing markers such as 'Once', 'Then', and 'while'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally faulty, such as the pronoun 'they' referring ambiguously back to the bamboo or workers. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the response, allowing the reader to follow the general narrative, though transitional links between sentences could be smoother to reach the next higher band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to manufacturing, such as 'cultivation', 'filtration', and 'extraction'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the overall precision, including 'feilds' for fields, 'splitted' for split, 'amino oxides' instead of amine oxide, 'spinned' for spun, 'yam' and 'threads yam' instead of yarn, and 'weaved' instead of woven. These lexical inaccuracies and non-standard word forms cause occasional confusion and limit the score to this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and adverbial dependent clauses such as 'Once the liquid pulp is collected, it is spinned...'. However, there are frequent errors in verb forms, voice, and articles, such as 'the bamboo plantation is initiated in spring's season', 'the the crops', and incorrect passive constructions like 'the fibers strips are crushed'. These grammatical inaccuracies persist throughout the text and require some effort from the reader to decode, keeping the grammatical range and accuracy at this level.
