IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrate the process of producing fabric from the bamboo plants.

Overall, from the cultivation of plants to the production of goods with synthetic fabric, the whole process is comprised of nine different steps.

At first, bamboo plants are planted in the spring season. These plants reached to their maturity in autumn, and then harvested by using man power. A sharp blade is then used to cut bamboo plants into vertical strips, which are further crushed to extract liquid pulp from it. A filtration process is carried out in order to separate the long fibres from the liquid pulp.

Later on, the separated fibres turned soft by adding water and amine oxide. In the next step, a yarn is made by spinning the soft fibres. A large number of yarn is widely used to make fabric by the technique known as weaving. At the end, many products like socks and shirts are manufactured from that fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by covering the entire nine-step manufacturing process of bamboo fabric. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that the whole process comprises nine different steps from cultivation to the final product. However, some stages of the process are described with limited development. For instance, the transition from cutting strips to crushing them is mentioned briefly, and the final stages could have integrated more comparative details regarding how the mechanical and chemical phases interconnect. Despite these minor limitations, the key features and main trends of the diagram are successfully identified and reported, satisfying the core requirements of this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the initial planting stage down to the final finished products. Information is structured across paragraphs effectively, separating the introduction, the overview, and the sequential steps of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'At first', 'Later on', 'In the next step', and 'At the end' are employed to guide the reader through the stages, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related ideas, but a more flexible and varied use of referencing and linking expressions would elevate the organisation further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used to communicate the information effectively for this task type. The student successfully attempts less common vocabulary relevant to the process, such as 'cultivation', 'extraction', 'filtration', and 'weave'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and word formation, such as 'The diagram illustrate' instead of 'illustrates' and 'man power' instead of 'manual labour'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they remain minor and do not impede the overall communication of the process.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures appropriate for a process description, such as 'are planted', 'are harvested', and 'are manufactured'. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'These plants reached to their maturity' and minor prepositional or article inaccuracies like 'by using man power' and 'a yarn'. While these errors in grammar are noticeable, they occur alongside correct structures and rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid middle-tier control of sentence mechanics.
