IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the main stages involved in the process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo, showing how harvested bamboo is converted into finished raw materials.Overall, the procedure is linear and consists of clearly nine stages, beginning with the growing of bamboo and ends with the production of clothing items.

The process starts with the planting of bamboo in spring and later harvested in autumn, which is then cut into thin strips. Following this, strips are crushed for the production of liquid pulp. The pulp is then filtered for the collection of long fibres.

In the next stage, these fibres are soften by addition of water and amine oxide, yhe material is then spun to produce yarn.

Finally, the yarn is then woven to make fabric and then converted into items like T- shirts and socks.

In summary, the process follows a systematic sequence of steps that effectively transforms the original material into a usable final product.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of how fabric is manufactured from bamboo. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, noting that the process is linear and consists of nine stages. However, some parts of the process are developed more fully than others. While the initial growing, harvesting, and pulping stages are clearly reported, the later stages of spinning and weaving are somewhat condensed. Furthermore, there is a minor omission regarding the final step depicted in the diagram, where finished clothing items such as T-shirts and socks are produced from the fabric. To achieve a higher band, the response would need to ensure that every stage depicted in the visual data is fully and accurately covered with equal clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the initial planting of bamboo to the final creation of fabric and clothing items. Information is presented in a logical sequence that mirrors the stages in the diagram. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main body stages, and the summary. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'The process starts with', 'Following this', and 'In the next stage' are employed to guide the reader through the sequence. However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical, and referencing could be smoother, preventing the response from reaching the higher band where cohesive devices are used more flexibly and unobtrusively.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, allowing the writer to describe the industrial process effectively with terms such as 'manufacturing', 'linear', 'procedure', 'liquid pulp', and 'fibre'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'amine oxide' and 'systematic sequence'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and word forms, such as using 'harvested' where a noun or gerund might fit better ('later harvested' instead of 'later harvesting') and spelling slips like 'yhe' instead of 'the'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score to the present band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and participial phrases. There is some control over sentence structure, but several grammatical errors and awkward agreements are present. For instance, the opening sentence contains a redundancy and a tense clash ('ends with the production' following 'beginning with'), and a passive voice error occurs in 'these fibres are soften' instead of 'softened'. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional slips, such as missing commas or incorrect determiners before 'T- shirts'. These errors represent a mix of structures with some persistent mistakes that keep the grammar profile at this level.
