IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The diagram illustrates the main stages involved in the process of producing bamboo fabric, showing how harvested bamboo is transformed into finished textile products. Overall, the procedure is linear and consists of several clear steps, beginning with growing the bamboo plants and ending with the production of clothing items.

The process starts when bamboo is planted in spring and later harvested in autumn. Following this, the stalks are cut into thin strips, which form the raw material for processing. The material is then crushed to produce a liquid pulp, which prepares it for fibre extraction.

In the next stage, the pulp is filtered to separate long fibres from the liquid. Once this has been completed, the fibres are softened with water and amine oxide so they can be spun. At this point, the softened fibres are processed further depending on the final purpose.

Finally, the material is spun into yarn and woven into fabric, which is then converted into items such as T-shirts and socks. In summary, the process follows a systematic sequence that transforms raw bamboo into usable fabric.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from harvesting to final clothing production. The overview is clear and accurately summarises the linear nature of the process. Key features, such as crushing, filtering, softening, and weaving, are reported accurately based on the visual data. The progression is easy to follow, and the details are appropriately selected without unnecessary clutter. To achieve a higher band, the writer could provide slightly more detailed comparisons or deeper elaboration on specific mechanical or chemical transformations depicted in the diagram, such as the specific role of amine oxide in softening the fibres.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are arranged chronologically, mirroring the stages of the diagram effectively. Cohesive devices such as 'following this', 'in the next stage', and 'finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader smoothly through the process. Paragraphing is handled well, with a natural introduction, logical body descriptions, and a concluding summary. While the cohesion is clear and effective, achieving a higher level would require even more sophisticated and varied transitional mechanisms and seamless referencing that never feels formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, employing task-specific terms such as 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'textile products' appropriately. Less common lexical items are attempted with a strong awareness of style and collocation, as seen in phrases like 'systematic sequence' and 'raw material'. There are very few lexical errors, and communication is clear throughout. To move towards an even higher band, the writer could incorporate more sophisticated, less common academic synonyms and idiomatic lexical chunks to demonstrate a wider and more flexible range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response showcases a good variety of complex structures alongside simple sentence forms, with frequent error-free sentences demonstrating strong grammatical control. Verb tenses and passive voice constructions appropriate for a process description, such as 'is planted', 'are cut', and 'is filtered', are handled accurately. Punctuation is well managed, and dependent prepositions inside grammatical patterns are used correctly. A few minor slips or limitations in structural variety persist, preventing the grammar from reaching the highest tier, but overall control is solid and never impedes communication.
