IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.

Overall, it is a linear process where intially it is harvested of bamboo and at the end of the production of finished fabric. In the beginning of the process it is physical process and then the chemicals are used to produce suitable fabric.

On a closer observation it can be seen that mature bamboo is harvested and cut into smaller pieces. These pieces are crushed to produce bamboo fabires. Furthermore, in filtration process, from long fibres the liquid gets seperated by crushing. The chemical is mixed on fibres by addition of water and an amine oxide which soften the fibres and pulpy substance.

Finally, the fabries are spin to make yarn and then yarn is woven altogether to make fabric. The fabric is ready to make clothes which undergoes a series of mechanical and chemical transformation before it becomes a finished textile.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the overall requirements of the task by outlining the main stages of how bamboo fabric is manufactured. There is an attempt at an overview, stating that it is a linear process beginning with harvesting and ending with finished fabric, and noting the transition from physical to chemical processes. However, some stages are described vaguely or with confusing details, such as mentioning that the liquid gets separated 'by crushing' during the filtration step, which does not fully capture the precision of the visual data. While the main steps are covered, some parts are under-developed, placing the response squarely at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement and follows the chronological sequence of the diagram using transitional markers such as 'Overall', 'In the beginning', and 'Finally'. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division between paragraphs could be structured more logically. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as 'where intially it is harvested of bamboo', and referencing is not always clear, leading to occasional awkwardness in the flow of ideas. To reach a higher standard, the transitions between sentences need to be smoother and referencing terms must be handled with greater precision.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

An adequate vocabulary is used to convey the basic steps of the process, with attempts at less common items such as 'filtration', 'transformation', and 'amine oxide'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, including 'intially', 'fabires', 'fabries', and 'spin' instead of 'spun'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they reflect a limited and somewhat inaccurate control over lexical items. Expanding your range of precise process-related verbs and checking spelling carefully will help elevate your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at variation. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in sentence structures, prepositions, and verb forms, such as 'it is harvested of bamboo', 'it is physical process', and 'the chemical is mixed on fibres by addition'. Punctuation is also occasionally neglected, as seen in run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally understandable despite these issues, improving the accuracy and control of complex sentence patterns is necessary to achieve a higher score.
