IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given diagram illustrates the process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo.
Overall, it is a linear process where initially bamboo harvested and end with production of finished fabric. In the beginning of the process it is a physical process and then chemicals are used to produce suitable fabric.
On closer observation it can be seen that mature bamboo is harvested and cut into smaller pieces. These pieces are crushed to produce bamboo fibres. Furthermore, in filtration process, from long fibres the liquid gets seperated by filtration. The chemical is mixed on fibres by addition of water and an amine oxide, which soften the fibres to produce pulpy substance.
Finally, the fabries are spun to make yarn and then yarn is woven together to make fabric. The fabric is ready to make clothes which undergoe a series of mechanical and chemical transformations before it becomes a finished textile.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response sits below the word count minimum, being slightly short of the required 150 words. While it attempts to cover the whole process from planting bamboo to finished fabric, some stages are presented somewhat generally or with minor inaccuracies regarding the sequence. For instance, the transition from cutting into strips to crushing and filtering is slightly confused, and the overview merely restates the prompt rather than giving a fully developed summary of the main stages. To reach a higher band, the response would need to meet the length requirement fully and present a clearer, more precise overview highlighting key stages such as the chemical and mechanical transformation points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The report demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with logical paragraphing that separates the introduction, overview, and body steps. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in abrupt transitions like 'Furthermore, in filtration process' and referencing issues such as 'the fabries are spun'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but the logical progression between the middle and final steps could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without repetition or awkward referencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'harvested', 'fibres', 'pulpy substance', and 'yarn'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'seperated', 'fabries', and 'undergoe', alongside some slightly unnatural phrasing like 'end with production of finished fabric'. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for describing the process. To improve, the writer should eliminate basic spelling mistakes and incorporate a broader, more precise range of less common lexical items with accurate word formation and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'On closer observation it can be seen that mature bamboo is harvested...' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('initially bamboo harvested'), incorrect prepositions ('mixed on fibres'), and subject-verb agreement or voice issues ('the liquid gets seperated'). These errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. To move up to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips, particularly regarding passive voice formations and article usage.
