IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustrates the multi-stage process involved in the production of fabric from bamboo plants.
Overall, the process is a cyclical and sequential system consisting of nine ditinct stages. It begins with agricultural cultivation and harvesting, progresses through mechanical and chemical refinement, and culminates in the manufacturing of consumer clothing items.
In the initial stages, bamboo plants are planted during the spring season. Once fully grown, they are harvested later in the year during autumn. Following the harvest, the bamboo stalks are cut mechanically into small strips. These strips are then crused using heavy machinery to transform the soild material into a liquid pulp.
The subsequent stages involve refining and manufacturing the material. In the fifth step, the liquid pulp is filtered through a funnel mechanism to separate the long, usable fibers are softened in a chemical mixture containing water and amine oxide. After the softening process, the refined fibers are spun into yarn, which is then woven to produce the final bamboo fabric is used to manufactures various types of apparel, such as socks and t-shirts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all key stages of the manufacturing process from planting the bamboo to the final clothing items, demonstrating a good overview of the diagram. The student selects and reports the main features and makes relevant comparisons across the steps. However, some parts of the description are slightly underdeveloped or contain minor lapses in clarity regarding the exact progression, particularly in the transition between chemical treatment and spinning. To reach a higher band, the response would need to provide a more fully developed account of the intermediate mechanical and chemical transformations with greater precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The text presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout, moving naturally from the initial agricultural steps to the final manufacturing stage. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction and overview from the body details. The student employs cohesive devices adequately, such as 'In the initial stages', 'Following the harvest', and 'The subsequent stages', guiding the reader smoothly through the process. Cohesion is generally well managed, though referencing and transitions could be slightly more polished to achieve a higher level of fluency.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for an academic task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'cultivation', 'refinement', and 'apparel'. However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'ditinct' instead of 'distinct', 'crused' instead of 'crushed', and 'soild' instead of 'solid'. Furthermore, a slight slip occurs in phrasing where fibers 'are softened' without a clear subject link. These errors do not impede communication, placing this criterion comfortably within the mid-band range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures appropriately for a process description, such as 'bamboo plants are planted' and 'the liquid pulp is filtered'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably a run-on and incomplete phrasing error in the final sentence ('the final bamboo fabric is used to manufactures'). Despite these lapses, the errors are infrequent and rarely impede overall comprehension, reflecting a solid command of basic sentence structures alongside attempts at more complex clauses.
