IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The diagram illustrates the process by which bamboo is transformed into fabric. Overall, this is a linear process consisting of nine distinct stages, starting with planting bamboo and ending with fabric production. It is not particularly labour-intensive, requiring minimal manual intervention and some basic technical equipment.
In the initial stages, bamboo plants are sown in spring and then harvested in autumn once they have matured. After harvesting, the stalks are mechanically cut into strips, which are subsequently crushed to form a liquid pulp, marking the end of the preparatory phase.
In the next sequence, the liquid pulp is filtered to separate the long fibres from the rest of the material. These extracted fibres are then softened using water and amine oxide, a chemical agent. Once softened, the material is spun into yarn, after which it is woven to produce fabric. Finally, the fabric is turned into garments, such as socks and T-shirts, completing the production cycle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview of the process and reporting the main features across the nine stages. The overview effectively highlights that the process is linear and requires minimal manual intervention. All stages from planting to fabric production are covered accurately and supported with relevant details from the diagram. To achieve a higher band, the writer could provide a slightly more detailed comparison or highlight specific chemical or mechanical transitions more extensively, ensuring that every stage is fully expanded without over-generalising parts of the preparatory phase.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with a distinct introduction, a body paragraph covering the preparatory phase, and a concluding body paragraph detailing the final production steps. Cohesive devices such as 'In the initial stages', 'After harvesting', and 'In the next sequence' are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader smoothly through the sequence of events. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, maintaining a natural flow that avoids mechanical transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for precision and flexibility in describing a technical process. Less common items such as 'transformed', 'preparatory phase', 'chemical agent', and 'production cycle' are deployed effectively with a strong awareness of academic style and collocation. Word choices are generally accurate, allowing the message to be communicated clearly, though occasional minor enhancements could elevate the sophistication of the phrasing closer to the highest level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writing exhibits a good variety of complex structures and frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating strong control over grammar and punctuation. The student successfully integrates passive voice constructions ('bamboo plants are sown', 'the stalks are mechanically cut', 'the liquid pulp is filtered'), which are well-suited for describing a manufacturing process. Punctuation is handled accurately, and subordinate clauses are managed well without introducing distracting errors that might impede communication.
