IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process to make the bamboo fabric.

Overall, it comprises 9 steps, starting from growing bamboo plants and then harvesting. In the last step, the weaved fabric is converted to a usable product: shirt and socks.

While bamboo plants are grown in the spring, they are carefully harvested in the autumn, giving them enough time to grow properly. Then, these large bamboo sticks are cut into strips, by the sharp cutter. Subsequently, these strips are properly crushed so that it turns to a liquid pulp. This pulp undergoes thorough filteration which separates the long fibres from liquid. Next, the extracted fibres are softened by adding water and amine oxide. These soften fibres are, then, spun into a yarn. Fabric is made by weaving, using the same yarn. This weaved fabric is stitched to give them a desired shape such as a shirt or sock.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of how bamboo fabric is manufactured, from planting to the final products. An overview is provided, highlighting the total number of steps and the endpoints of the process. However, the word count requirement is not met, as the response is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which limits the overall development. Some stages, such as the crushing and filtering steps, are described rather briefly without fully expanding on all the available details from the diagram. To reach a higher level, the response should comfortably exceed the minimum word length and provide a more fully developed account of each individual stage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from the initial growth of the bamboo to the final production of shirts and socks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices such as 'Then', 'Subsequently', 'Next', and 'while' are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, though referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or formulaic. The transition from the middle row to the bottom row is managed adequately, but finer cohesive ties within the complex steps would elevate the response to a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'spun into a yarn'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'filteration' instead of 'filtration', and awkward collocations like 'sharp cutter' instead of a mechanical saw or cutter. The phrasing 'the weaved fabric' also contains a word-form error (woven). To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice and completely eliminate spelling slips while using a wider variety of sophisticated terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses ('While bamboo plants are grown in the spring...'). There are some grammatical errors, including article misuse ('to make the bamboo fabric' instead of 'to make bamboo fabric') and pluralization/agreement issues like 'These soften fibres'. Punctuation is generally handled well, and the errors present do not impede communication. For a higher band, the writer should aim for a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure accurate adjective-noun agreement and article usage throughout.
