IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram illustratres the process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo. The process comprised on 3 major steps: harvesting, extraction of fibres, converting into fabric.
The process commence with the growing of bamboo plant which occurred in spring season, after that it has been harvested in the season of autumn which is followed by cutting of bamboo into small fragments through the cutter. Subsequently, strips further crushed, which assist in the making of liquid pulp. Liquid pulp passed through the filter which extract the long fibres from liquid. Water and amine oxide added in fibres, to make these long fibres more soften, after reaching to the point where fibres become soften and became ready to prepared like thread, it will spin to make yarn, accompanied by thread will be weaved to make it proper fabric.
Eventually form this fabric different clothes can be prepared like shirts, socks, trousers, caps etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all main stages of the diagram, moving from planting and harvesting to processing, spinning, weaving, and final clothing creation. You provide a clear overview at the beginning, identifying the major phases of the manufacturing process. However, some parts of the description are a bit underdeveloped or mechanically tied to the sequential numbers without fully synthesizing the relationships. For example, the description of softening the fibres by adding water and amine oxide is somewhat tangled and lacks clarity in how it connects to the filtering stage. To reach a higher level, you should ensure every step is explained with greater precision and smoother integration of the intermediate chemical and physical changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your response has a coherent overall arrangement, successfully guiding the reader through the sequence from bamboo planting to finished garments. You use transitional markers like 'after that', 'subsequently', and 'eventually' to signal progression. However, cohesion sometimes feels mechanical, and referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in long, run-on sentences like 'Water and amine oxide added in fibres...'. Paragraphing is also an area for improvement; the entire description after the introduction is condensed into a single dense paragraph rather than being broken down into logical stages like harvesting, extraction, and production. Dividing your text into clear paragraphs would significantly enhance readability and logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range suitable for describing a process, using appropriate task-specific terms such as 'harvesting', 'liquid pulp', 'long fibres', 'yarn', and 'weaved'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors, awkward word forms, and spelling mistakes that reveal limitations in lexical control. For instance, you wrote 'illustratres' instead of 'illustrates', 'comprised on' instead of 'comprises', and 'soften' instead of 'softened'. Additionally, phrases like 'ready to prepared like thread' and 'form this fabric' contain lexical and collocational inaccuracies. Expanding your repertoire of precise process verbs and ensuring correct word forms will help elevate your vocabulary score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial phrases such as 'which assist in the making of liquid pulp' and 'accompanied by thread will be weaved'. However, control over grammar and sentence structure is inconsistent, with frequent errors in passive voice formation, auxiliary verbs, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns. For example, you wrote 'the growing of bamboo plant which occurred', missing articles, and tangled the second sentence with 'it has been harvested... which is followed by cutting... through the cutter.' Furthermore, clauses are often strung together with commas rather than appropriate conjunctions or full stops, resulting in run-on structures that occasionally impede smooth communication.
