IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the detailed porocess of manufacture of fabric made from bamboo plants. It seems to be a lengthy procedure of nine steps that begins by planting bamboo plants in the spring and ends with weaving to make socks and T-shirts from the bamboo fibre.
First of all, bamboo plants planted in spring, are harvested during the autumn season manually. Large bamboo sticks are cut into thin strips by a spinning roller with sharp blades on the surface. Thenafter, strips are crushed to prepare a liquid pulp which are filtered through the funnel to separate log softened fibres from the liquid.
Furthermore, thin strips are softened in water and amine oxide to get soft fibres which can be spinned into a ball to make a yarn. The final process includes weaving of the yarn to make the fabric that can be manufactured into different clothings like t-shirts and socks.Overall, the given process is quite interesting to observe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarising the main features of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, providing a clear overview at the beginning, and following the sequence from planting to final products. However, some parts of the process are under-developed or lack precision. For instance, the transition between steps is occasionally slightly compressed, and details such as the specific role of amine oxide or the exact sequence of filtering and softening could be more fully linked to the visual data. The summary touches upon all nine steps, but a deeper integration of the comparisons or relationships between the mechanical and chemical stages would elevate the response further. Overall, the information is relevant and accurately represents the provided diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the initial harvesting stage to the final clothing items. The response is divided into logical paragraphs that separate the stages of the process effectively. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'First of all', 'Thenafter', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly repetitive in transition style, which prevents the essay from achieving a higher band. Paragraphing is used adequately to group the information, and the overall progression is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, attempting less common terms such as 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'spinning roller'. There are, however, some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies, such as the typographical error 'porocess' in the opening sentence, 'Thenafter' instead of 'thereafter', and 'spinned' instead of 'spun'. Additionally, phrases like 'different clothings' contain minor word-formation errors. Despite these slips, meaning is successfully communicated, and the vocabulary is sufficiently varied to handle the requirements of the task without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and participial phrases, such as 'fabric made from bamboo plants' and 'fibres which can be spinned'. There are some noticeable errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, including missing articles ('bamboo plants planted in spring, are harvested') and prepositional or agreement issues ('a liquid pulp which are filtered'). These errors occur throughout the text, reflecting the characteristics of this band level where some grammatical control is evident, but frequent minor slips prevent error-free sentences from becoming the majority. Nevertheless, communication is rarely impeded by these inaccuracies.
