IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the linear nine-step manufacturing process of how clothing and fabric are made from bamboo.

Overall, the process includes agricultural phases, mechanical breakdown, chemical processes, and textile manufacturing. Beginning with the planting of bamboo and ending with the finished textile product.

The initial phase includes planting and harvesting bamboo. The seeds are planted in the soil during spring and mature over months until harvested in autumn. Once harvested, bamboo sticks go through a mechanical process. They are cut in pieces and crushed into a plum.

Following the mechanical phase, liquid plum goes through a chemical phase in which a plum is passed through a filter to separate fiber from the liquid. Now to soften the extracted fiber, it is mixed with water and amine oxide.

In the manufacturing, this soft fabric is spun to create yarn, which is subsequently woven to make a bamboo fabric sheet. This sheet further goes into the manufacturing process to create different types of textile products like shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the nine-step bamboo manufacturing process from the initial agricultural phase to the final textile products. An overview is provided, capturing the main stages of the process well. The selection of main features is generally accurate, although some details are slightly underdeveloped or contain minor lexical slips regarding the technical steps, such as mentioning 'plum' instead of pulp. The progression from planting and harvesting to mechanical crushing, chemical filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving is clearly reported. To reach the next level, the student should ensure all intermediate chemical and physical transformations are described with greater precision, avoiding slight inaccuracies in terminology while maintaining comprehensive coverage of every stage shown in the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The information flows sensibly from the beginning of the process to the end, supported by appropriate transitional markers such as 'Overall', 'Beginning with', 'Once harvested', and 'Following the mechanical phase'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, overview, mechanical phase, chemical phase, and manufacturing stage into distinct, readable sections. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, though referencing could occasionally be smoother to avoid slightly mechanical transitions between sentences. To push into higher bands, the writer could employ more sophisticated and varied cohesive patterns to link clauses and sentences effortlessly without relying on standard sequential connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to manufacturing processes such as 'agricultural phases', 'mechanical breakdown', and 'textile manufacturing'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, most prominently the repeated confusion between 'plum' and 'pulp' (e.g., 'crushed into a plum', 'liquid plum goes through a chemical phase'), as well as minor phrasing issues like 'cut in pieces' instead of 'cut into pieces'. These lexical inaccuracies slightly impede precision. To improve this criterion, the writer must ensure greater accuracy in spelling and collocations, selecting exact technical terms suited to process diagrams.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing exhibits a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'which are subsequently woven to make a bamboo fabric sheet'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples include minor prepositional or article slips, such as 'In the manufacturing,' where a noun phrase is incomplete, and 'into the manufacturing process' instead of 'through the manufacturing process'. The majority of basic structures are handled well, and verb tenses remain appropriately consistent in the present tense. To achieve a higher band, the student should increase the frequency of error-free complex structures and refine minor grammatical patterns.
