IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The diagram illustrates the information about how fabric is produced from bamboo.

Overall, the bamboo travel through several procedures like crushing and filteration by various chemical mediators to turn into fabric. For this, the bamboo has to go through 8 detailed steps to form into a fabric, which can be used to make clothes.

The cultivation of bamboo starts in spring and ends by harvesting in autumn. The eligible good quality bamboo sticks are then cut into small strips for easy crushing in the next step. The crushed strips go through a special filteration process for separating liquid and long fibers. Water and amine oxide are added to these fibers to soften them which makes it easier to make them into a yarn.

After developing yarns by spinning the soft fibre, the yarns are sent to professional weavers who weave the yearn into a fabric. This fabric is later distributed or outsourced to create clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages in the bamboo manufacturing process, from cultivation to finished garments. The overview provides a clear summary, noting the sequence of crushing, chemical treatment, and weaving. However, some stages are slightly under-developed or generalized; for example, the specific steps of filtering and softening are grouped together rather than fully expanded with their distinct sequential nuances. To reach the next level, the overview could be more expansive, and every single step of the nine-part diagram could be traced with greater precision regarding intermediate physical forms.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the description of the linear process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the preliminary steps, and the final stages of manufacturing. Cohesive devices such as 'For this', 'After developing yarns', and 'This fabric' are employed to guide the reader through the sequence, though referencing and transitions occasionally feel somewhat mechanical rather than entirely seamless. The overall progression remains coherent and easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common and process-specific items such as 'cultivation', 'amine oxide', 'weavers', and 'outsourced'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('filteration' instead of filtration, 'yearn' instead of yarn) and minor word-form or collocation inaccuracies ('travel through several procedures' instead of goes through several stages). These minor lexical slips and spelling mistakes occasionally impede absolute precision, restricting the score to the current band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The text contains a suitable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over standard process-description structures. Examples such as 'The crushed strips go through a special filteration process for separating liquid and long fibers' show effective clause coordination. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the bamboo travel' instead of travels) and missing articles, but these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of simple sentences are accurate.
