IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The process diagram illustrates the stages of making fabric from bamboo.

Overall, producing fabric is a nine-step process. It starts from growing bamboo plant in spring and ends with creating shirts and socks from the fabric. Bamboo plant is harvested in autumn season, from which yarn is made.

First, bamboo trees are planted in spring, which later harvest in autumn season. Those bamboo are cut into a large number of strips in this process. The strips are crushed thoroughly to make liquid pulp along with fibers for filtration.

In next phase, the long fibres of bamboo is separated from the liquid pulp in filtration step. Water and amine oxide is added in filtered long fibers to make them soft.

Finally, the soft fiber is, then, picked carefully to make a yarn by using spin technique. Workers use the yarn to make long and wide fabric. Finally, new clothes such as shirts and socks are manufactured for people to buy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and summarising the main features of the bamboo manufacturing process from start to finish. The student correctly identifies the nine stages and outlines key transformations, such as harvesting in autumn, crushing into liquid pulp, filtering long fibres, and eventually weaving fabric into clothing. However, some stages are somewhat briefly described or slightly underdeveloped compared to others. For instance, the transition from spinning yarn to weaving fabric is glossed over rather quickly without fully explaining the sequence of operations shown in the diagram. This places the task achievement comfortably at the current level, bridging the gap towards fully extended and detailed descriptions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and subsequent body paragraphs following the chronological steps of the process. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the stages, using sequencing markers like 'First', 'In next phase', and 'Finally'. Nevertheless, cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical, and referencing between sentences is occasionally slightly loose, such as the pronoun use in 'Those bamboo are cut'. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed process steps, maintaining logical progression throughout the report.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is utilised to accomplish the task successfully. The student attempts less common and process-specific terminology related to manufacturing, such as 'liquid pulp', 'filtration step', 'amine oxide', and 'spin technique'. While communication is never impeded, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'growing bamboo plant' instead of 'plants' and 'Those bamboo are cut' instead of 'The bamboo stalks'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary is sufficient for the task, though adding more precise lexical items would elevate the response further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at multi-clause structures. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present throughout the response, particularly involving subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'long fibres of bamboo is separated' instead of 'are separated', and omitting necessary articles before singular countable nouns like 'spin technique'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach higher bands, the student needs to increase control over complex grammatical patterns and eliminate frequent minor slips in agreement and articles.
