IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates process of manufacturing of fabric and clothing from bamboo, beginning from cultivation and ending with manufacturing of clothing.

overall, there are nine stages in the process which can be divided into three major broad phases; growing the bamboo, process and converting it into fabric.

According to diagram harvesting time of bamboo is in autumn and after harvesting it is converted into small strips. Strips were crushed and converted to liquid pulp and this liquid is filtered through a proper process to get long fibers seperated. Following this, in the next step fiber is soften by adding water and amine oxide. In the final step soften fibers are spun to make yarn and weaved to make fabric by a chemical process. Finally amazing clothes are ready to wear for example shirts and socks.

Thus, the production of bamboo fabric involves series of mechanical and chemical processess, transforming raw bamboo into useable textile products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from cultivation to the final products. However, some aspects are covered more fully than others, and certain details lack sufficient extension. For instance, the transition from cutting into strips to creating liquid pulp and filtering is condensed, and the final stage regarding clothing is only briefly mentioned. There is an overview provided at the beginning, noting that the process has nine stages and three major phases, which satisfies the requirement to present a summary of the main features. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure that all steps of the process receive a more balanced level of detail and that the comparisons and transitions between the various physical and chemical transformations are more fully highlighted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence that follows the steps of the diagram. Progression is generally logical, moving from the initial planting in spring through harvesting, cutting, and chemical processing, to the final spinning and weaving stages. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. Words like 'overall' (written in lowercase) and 'According to diagram' lack necessary articles, and transitional markers are somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on 'after harvesting', 'Following this', and 'In the final step'. Paragraphing is also an area for development; the entire body of the response is compressed into a single large block following the introduction, rather than being broken down into logical phases or stages. To improve cohesion, the student should use more varied transitional phrases and structure the essay into distinct, well-managed paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less-common items relevant to the diagram such as 'cultivation', 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'textile products'. However, there are notable inaccuracies in word choice and word formation that prevent a higher score. For example, 'process and converting' should be 'processing and converting', 'seperated' contains a spelling error, 'fiber is soften' should be 'fibers are softened', and 'useable' is better spelled as 'usable'. Additionally, phrases like 'amazing clothes' are too informal for an Academic task. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in lexical selection, ensure correct word forms and spelling, and maintain an appropriately academic register throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to link clauses with conjunctions and relative structures. There is control over basic sentence construction, but some errors in grammar and punctuation are present. Notable issues include missing articles, such as 'The diagram illustrates process' instead of 'illustrates the process' and 'According to diagram' instead of 'According to the diagram'. Furthermore, there are subject-verb agreement and pluralisation issues, such as 'Strips were crushed' mixed with present tense verbs elsewhere, and 'series of mechanical and chemical processess' where 'processess' has a spelling and pluralisation issue. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they persist throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and pay closer attention to articles and verb tense consistency.
