IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The below diagram illustrates the formation of fabric from bamboo, Firstly the bamboo seed will be deployed in the soil and wait till the spring season to grow them properly once the spring season is there, they are all set for the harvestation by the farmers and once the harvestation process is done they will sent into the cutting machine to cut them into the small strips furthermore the strips should be crushed to make them a liquid pulp Additionally filter process would start and the fibres will put into a machine and filtered by which long fibres are separated from liquid after this process and soften fibres are made from the cutting and in those fibres initially add some water and amine oxide for the better results. If all this steps are done then the spin process came this helps the fibres to make them a yarn and after this the weave made and lastly the clothes has made by bamboo.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response covers the overall process of making bamboo fabric, attempting to outline the stages from planting to final clothing items. However, the explanation is minimal and misses several key steps and details shown in the diagram, such as the specific spring and autumn timing details being conflated or the exact transition points. The selection of features is limited, and the progression of the process lacks full development, resulting in a response that only partially addresses the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text suffers from a lack of proper paragraphing, presented instead as a single long block of text. Cohesive devices are weak and repetitive, relying heavily on basic linkers like 'and once', 'furthermore', and 'after this process'. There is little logical progression or clear separation of steps, making the flow difficult to follow at times. While there is a basic attempt to sequence the stages chronologically, the overall organization remains rudimentary and lacks cohesive control.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable word choice and word formation errors, such as 'harvestation' instead of harvesting, 'soften fibres' instead of softened fibres, and 'spin process came'. These errors reflect a limited control over lexical items and word forms. While the student attempts to use some process-specific vocabulary like 'liquid pulp' and 'amine oxide', inaccuracies in collocation and word derivation restrict the clarity and precision of the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, primarily relying on lengthy, run-on sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions and commas rather than full stops or semicolons. There are frequent grammatical errors, including incorrect verb tenses ('will sent into', 'fibres will put'), missing articles, and faulty prepositions ('add some water... for the better results'). These frequent errors and poor punctuation strain the reader and distort meaning in several places.
