IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram is displayed to help understand the fabric making process from bamboo plants.
Once the bamboo plants are ripe they are harvested and then go through cutting, softening, filtering and crushing processes in order to make the thread that is used to make the fabric.
The bamboo plants are planted in the Spring and harvested in Autumn when they are ribe by farmers. These ripe bamboos are then cut into strips with help of cutting tools. These strips are further crushed to make liquid pulp which is filtered and the liquidis turned into separate long fibres.
The fibres are softened by using water and chemicals like amine oxide. This results in formation of yarn that is spun into the form of balls. Yarn is used in weaving; a process which makes the fabric. These weaved fabrics are further sewn into wearables like shirts, socks etc., ready to hit he market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response successfully covers all main parts of the diagram, tracing the full nine-step process from planting bamboo to the finished garments. However, the progression of the steps is somewhat confused in the second paragraph, where cutting, softening, filtering, and crushing are listed out of their proper sequence. The visual data indicates that crushing happens before filtering, and softening occurs later in the process. Because some of these relationships are slightly blurred and under-developed, the task achievement sits at this level rather than fully extending every stage of the lifecycle.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response displays a coherent overall arrangement, dividing the description into a brief introductory sentence and subsequent paragraphs detailing the stages. Cohesive devices are employed to connect the steps, such as 'Once the bamboo plants are ripe', 'These ripe bamboos', and 'These strips are further crushed'. However, referencing and transitions are at times mechanical or slightly awkward, such as the sudden shift into the final stage with 'These weaved fabrics are further sewn'. Paragraphing is present, but logical progression could be smoother to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully incorporating specific terms from the diagram such as 'liquid pulp', 'filter', 'amine oxide', and 'yarn'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'wearables' and 'ripe', but some word choice and form errors occur, such as misspelling 'ripe' as 'ribe' and using 'weaved' instead of 'woven'. Additionally, phrasing like 'ready to hit he market' is too informal for an academic task, though overall the lexical choices do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures appropriately for a process description, such as 'are harvested', 'are cut into strips', and 'are softened'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles ('with help of cutting tools', 'in Spring', 'in Autumn'), punctuation slips ('the liquidis turned'), and a minor typo ('he market'). These errors occur alongside correct structures and rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical control securely in this band.
