Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given diagram illustrates fabric manufacturing from bamboo. The unit is used in steps.

Overall, it is a linear process that involves fabric manufacturing which consists of 8 steps from bamboo planting to wearing cloth .

According to the chart, first step Includes planting a bamboo tree in the spring , then harvesting it in the season of autumn. Mor ever, when bamboo grow then machine cuts it into strips . Additionally, to extract pulp strips crushed. Then separating long fibers from liquid it involves filtering process.

However , in the 6 step it comprises of soaking fibre into water and amine oxide to make fiber soft.

Further more , 7 stage consists of spin to soften fibres and to make yam , which then interlace together to make fabric in the 7 stage . Then, in the final procedure after all the steps cloths is ready to wear .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers the main stages of the process from planting bamboo to producing finished clothing, meeting the minimum word count requirement. However, the task is addressed only partially because some steps are either slightly confused or under-developed. For example, the student writes that in the seventh stage the yarn is spun to soften fibres, which misrepresents the diagram where spinning creates yarn and weaving creates fabric. Additionally, the overview is brief and somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, the student needs to provide a clearer overall summary of the cyclical or linear nature of the process and ensure all intermediate steps, such as filtering and crushing, are reported with greater accuracy and clarity without misinterpreting the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organization with an introductory statement, a body section, and a concluding remark, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas throughout the text. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as the abrupt transition 'Mor ever' and 'However , in the 6 step'. Paragraphing is poorly handled, with almost the entire body lumped into a single block of text. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes confusing, as seen in repetitive sequencing like 'in the 7 stage' used twice incorrectly for different steps. To improve cohesion, the student should group the process logically into distinct paragraphs representing different phases of manufacturing and use a wider, more accurate range of transition markers to guide the reader smoothly from one step to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to describe the basic actions in the diagram, including words like 'plant', 'harvest', 'strips', and 'fabric'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that cause some difficulty for the reader, such as 'yam' instead of yarn, 'interlace together' instead of simply interlace or weave, and 'cloths is ready' instead of clothing or clothes are ready. There are also spacing and punctuation errors tied to words, such as 'Mor ever' and 'Further more'. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of topic-specific vocabulary and collocations related to manufacturing processes, while eliminating basic spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic active constructions. When the student attempts more complex or passive structures, they are frequently faulty, such as 'to extract pulp strips crushed' and 'it involves filtering process' missing necessary articles and prepositions. There are also frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and word order, including 'when bamboo grow then machine cuts' and 'cloths is ready'. Punctuation is unreliable, with spaces placed incorrectly before commas in several instances. To improve in this area, the student must practice forming accurate complex sentences using correct passive voice structures, appropriate article usage, and reliable subject-verb agreement.
