IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the process in nine steps how fabric is manufactured from bambo.
Overall, process starts from plantation of bamboo pant in spring and harvesting in autmn, the material is cut, crushed filtered and soften. Finally, the fibers spun into yarn and weave into fabric, which can be used for the cloths.
At the first stage, bamboo plants are grown during spring. Once they are ready, they are harvested in autumn. The harvested bamboo is then cut into small strips using a cutting machine. After that, these strips are crushed in order to produce a liquid pulp.
Next, the liquid pulp is filtered so that the long fibres are separated from the liquid. These fibres are then softened by adding water and amine oxide. Following this, the softened fibres are spun to form yarn. In the next stage, the yarn is woven to create bamboo fabric. Finally, the finished fabric is used to manufacture clothing items such as T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the nine-step manufacturing process and highlighting the main stages from planting to the final clothing products. It covers the linear and cyclical nature of the diagram well, meeting the requirements of a Band 6 response while laying the groundwork for a higher band. However, certain parts are slightly under-developed or briefly glossed over; for example, the middle transformation steps involving crushing and filtering are condensed into a single sentence in the overview without fully exploring the physical changes depicted in the visual data. To reach the next level, the candidate should ensure that all key stages receive a more balanced depth of description and extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the initial planting stage down to the final manufactured items. The introduction, overview paragraph, and body paragraphs demonstrate adequate paragraphing, making the structure easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Once they are ready', 'After that', 'Next', and 'Following this' are utilized to connect the sequence of events, though some of these transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive rather than smoothly integrated. Additionally, referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking the transitional clauses would elevate the response toward more flexible and natural cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating process-specific terms such as 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', 'fibres', 'yarn', and 'woven'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('bambo' instead of 'bamboo', 'autmn' instead of 'autumn', 'soften' instead of 'softened') and minor word-form issues ('the fibers spun' instead of 'are spun', 'weave' instead of 'woven'). These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher score. To improve, the candidate needs to demonstrate greater precision in word forms and eliminate basic spelling mistakes through careful proofreading.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive voice constructions effectively in places such as 'bamboo plants are grown' and 'the liquid pulp is filtered'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing structures, such as 'The diagram illustrates the process in nine steps how fabric is manufactured', where a relative clause or indirect question structure is handled incorrectly. Other minor issues include missing auxiliary verbs in 'the fibers spun into yarn and weave into fabric'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly at the mid-level, but reducing such inaccuracies and expanding the variety of complex structures will be necessary for higher bands.
