IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagaram gives nine steps to make fabric yarn from bamboos.

Overall, manufacturing fabric is nine-step process, which starts by the plantation of bamboo plants and ends fabric product. It also includes chemcials for process of filteration and softening of fabrics.

Firstly, plants are sow and then yield in autumn. The harvest if then shaped into multiple thin strips.

the strips are then mashed togethe to create liquid pulp, compost is then operated through a filteration process, which differentiates long fibers from the mush. The harden fibres are then treated with chemicals(water and amine oxide) which soothes the fibres.

The softening process provides smooth fibres that are rolled into a yarn, which then is used to weave into symmetrical pattern to form sheets of fabirc. These end result fabric is then use into sewing desired clothes.

Overall, The fabric manufacturing process takes around nine full step to convert a planted bamboo into a piece of cloth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the diagram, accurately outlining the nine-step bamboo fabric manufacturing process from planting in spring to weaving and clothing production. An appropriate overview is provided at the beginning and reinforced at the end. However, some stages could be more fully developed or precise in their reporting; for instance, mentioning specific chemical inputs like water and amine oxide is good, but the overall explanation of the filtering and softening stages remains slightly basic. This places the response solidly in the middle bands, successfully presenting a clear mechanical overview while missing the depth and fully extended elaboration required for a higher band descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows the chronological sequence of the diagram successfully. Paragraphing is utilised to separate introduction, body stages, and conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen in repetitive opening statements ("Overall...") and transitional issues such as "the harvest if then shaped" and "compost is then operated". Referencing and logical progression between sentences occasionally falter, preventing the response from achieving a truly smooth flow. Cohesive devices are present but lack the flexibility and precision that characterise higher band performances.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the stages of bamboo processing using appropriate terms such as "plantation", "harvest", "liquid pulp", "fibres", and "yarn". However, there are noticeable word-choice, spelling, and word-form errors that detract from the quality, including "diagaram", "chemcials", "filteration", "sow" instead of sown, "mashed togethe", and "soothes" instead of softens. While these inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, the presence of frequent lexical slips and spelling mistakes keeps the lexical score constrained, as a more flexible and precise range is needed for higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, frequent grammatical and punctuation errors occur throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ("The harvest if then..."), awkward passive voice constructions ("compost is then operated through a filtration process"), incorrect verb forms ("are sow"), and missing punctuation or capitalization ("the strips are then..."). These errors require some effort from the reader to decode meaning and indicate that grammatical control is limited, placing this criterion at a lower band where errors are frequent.
