IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram shows the process of making apparels from a bamboo tree.

Overall, manufacturing process involves 9 steps starting from cultivating a bamboo tree to fabricating a dress.

Firstly, a bamboo plant is plowed in the spring season and when a bamboo is grown fully, the harvesting process takes place in the autumn season. After that, the harvested bamboos are sliced into thin strips that would later used to easily extract the pulp out of it using machines. Following the process, a purification of pulp from thin long fibres undergoes. In this way, a pure pulp of bamboo is now extracted. Later on, some chemical including amine oxide with a significant amount of water is mixed with this pulp that helps in softening of fibres. Then comes a process to make a thread from such mixture by spinning it at high speed. At the end, the weaving takes place to produce clothes and other apparels.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering the entire nine-step manufacturing process from planting bamboo to producing finished garments. There is a clear overview provided at the beginning, which outlines the total number of steps and the overall scope of the process. However, some stages of the process are developed less fully than others. For instance, the transition from cutting strips to crushing them is slightly conflated with the phrase 'that would later used to easily extract the pulp', and the distinction between crushing strips and filtering or softening is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher level, you should extend and clarify every single stage with greater precision, ensuring that all visual details, such as the specific chemical additives and the separation of long fibres, are fully elaborated without minor ambiguities.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the initial planting stage right through to the final weaving of clothes. The essay is structured into a logical flow using sequencing devices such as 'Firstly', 'After that', 'Following the process', and 'At the end'. Because the text is somewhat short and bundled together into two main paragraphs, cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical. Furthermore, referencing could be managed more smoothly, as seen in expressions like 'a purification of pulp from thin long fibres undergoes', which creates slight friction in logical flow. To achieve a higher band, paragraphing could be used more purposefully to separate the agricultural phase from the industrial chemical and manufacturing stages, while cohesive devices should be varied more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully communicate the core steps of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process. You make attempts at less common lexical items such as 'cultivating', 'harvesting', 'purification', and 'apparel'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form throughout the text. For example, writing 'making apparels from a bamboo tree' is slightly unnatural ('apparel' is usually uncountable, and 'manufacturing clothing from bamboo' is more precise), and 'a bamboo plant is plowed' misuses 'plowed' for planting. Additionally, 'some chemical including amine oxide' should use the plural 'chemicals'. To reach the next level, you need to use a wider range of precise, topic-specific vocabulary with fewer errors in collocation and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'when a bamboo is grown fully, the harvesting process takes place'. There are some grammatical errors in article usage, verb forms, and prepositional patterns, such as 'that would later used' (missing the auxiliary 'be'), 'a purification... undergoes' (awkward passive voice construction), and 'mixing with this pulp that helps in softening'. Fortunately, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To move up to a higher band, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences, ensuring better control over passive structures, relative clauses, and verb complements.
