IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided diagram illustrates the process which is used to make fabric from bamboo.

Overall, it can be ovserved that seven steps are included in the process beginning from planting bamboo plants to its filter and subsquntly weave the yarn to make fabric.

A closer look into the diagram reveals that the formation of fabric starts from the initial stage of plantation of bamboo plants in spring season followed by its harvest in autumn. After harvestation, the bamboo is cut into strips and apparently crushed to prepare liquid pulp.Furthermore, a filter is used to seperate long fibres from the liquid which subsquently leads to the net step which is softening the fibres by the addition of water and amine oxide.

Moreover, spin is used to make yarn from the fibres which is followed by weaving that is the final step in the formation of a fabric. Therefore, the process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo requires a long chain of different steps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the main purpose of the diagram by outlining the overall process of manufacturing fabric from bamboo. However, the overview is somewhat inaccurate, incorrectly stating that there are seven steps when the diagram clearly depicts nine distinct stages. While the main features are touched upon, some parts of the process are glossed over or generalised, such as grouping the final stages together loosely. To reach a higher level, the overview should accurately reflect the total number of steps shown in the visual data, and every key stage of the process should be presented with equal clarity and appropriate detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the process sequentially. Progression is established using transition words such as "Furthermore", "subsquently", and "Moreover". However, referencing and cohesive devices occasionally feel mechanical or are affected by minor spelling slips like "subsquently". Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion, yet paragraph boundaries could be managed more effectively to group related steps logically. Bridging the gap to the next band requires smoother, more natural transitions and a more integrated flow between sentences that avoids repetitive structural patterns.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe the stages of the manufacturing process using terms like "liquid pulp", "soften", "fibres", and "weave". There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by occasional word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as "ovserved", "subsquently", "harvestation", and "seperate". These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for greater precision in spelling and word forms. Achieving a higher band requires a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary used with fewer errors in collocation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as "The provided diagram illustrates the process which is used to make fabric from bamboo." There are some grammatical and punctuation errors present, including preposition use and article omissions, such as "in spring season" instead of "in the spring season" and "spin is used" where a noun form like "spinning" is required. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To progress further, the response would need a wider variety of complex grammatical structures used with consistent accuracy and better control over word forms within grammatical patterns.
