IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrates the method of making fabric by using bamboo as a raw material.
Overall, the bamboo plants undergone through 9 steps beginning from planting the seeds to getting fabric clothes.
Firstly, the seeds needs to be plant in the spring season for the maximum growth. after the first process it takes time to grow the plant out of seeds. once the plant grows the process of harvesting begin possibly in autumn. after harvesting the bamboos are cut into strips. then the idividual strip is going under process of crushing to make liquid pulp. Afterwards, the liquid pulp is go into a filter which can separate the long fibers from liquid.
Furthermore, in order to soften the fibers water and amino oxide is being added. the soften fibers then transform into a spin to make yarn. the weave is made from the yarn to make fabric. Lastly, different clothing items can be produce from the weave. which is basically made by using the bamboo as a raw material.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to the final clothing items. An overview is provided, and key features such as harvesting, crushing, and spinning are reported. However, some aspects of the process are underdeveloped or slightly imprecise. For instance, the description relies heavily on a chronological retelling of the steps rather than selecting and grouping the main features effectively, and certain details are overly simplified. To reach a higher level, the response would need a more fully developed overview highlighting the main trends or stages of the process, and a more precise presentation of the technical transitions shown in the diagram.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear linear progression following the steps of the diagram. It attempts paragraphing to divide the stages of the process, and cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Afterwards', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader through the steps. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in abrupt transitions between sentences and sentences starting with lowercase letters. To move towards a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices connect ideas more smoothly and that paragraphing is used with greater logical precision to group related stages of the manufacturing process together.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to the process such as 'raw material', 'harvesting', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', and 'yarn'. There are several attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by some word-choice and word-form errors, such as 'amino oxide' instead of amine oxide, 'soften' instead of softened, and 'produce' instead of produced. Spelling and word-choice errors are also present, such as 'idividual' and 'go into'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score. To achieve a higher band, the writer should demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocations, while eliminating basic spelling and morphological inaccuracies.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside some attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text. Examples include 'the bamboo plants undergone through', 'the seeds needs to be plant', 'the liquid pulp is go into', and 'the weave is made from the yarn'. Punctuation is also weak, with multiple sentences starting with lowercase letters and missing full stops or capitalization. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach the next level, the writer must produce a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and exercise much better control over basic grammatical rules, verb tenses, and punctuation.
