IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pictogram illustrates the process of manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.
Overall, the process consists od nine stages, starting with growing and harvesting bamboo and followed by series of chemical and mechanical processes to produce fibres. These fibers are then spun into yarn, woven into fabric and ultimately use to make clothes. Notably, the process changes from agricultural activities in the early stages to industrial processing in later stages.
First, the bamboo is cultivated in spring and harvested in autumn. After harvesting, the bamboo is cut into thin strips. Thes strips are subsequently crushed into liquid pulp. The pulp then undergoes filteration, during which long stripes are separated through liquid.
Next, the fibers are softened by adding water and amine oxide. Once they have been softened, they are spun into yarn. The yarn is then woven to create bamboo fabric, Finally, the fabric is used to manufacctured finished garments, such as T-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process from start to finish. The overview section is a strong point, effectively capturing the transition from agricultural activities to industrial processing and summarising the nine stages. All key steps, including harvesting, crushing, filtering, softening, spinning, and weaving, are reported accurately without major omissions or factual errors. To reach the highest band levels, the description could offer slightly more elaboration on the specific technical parameters or physical changes occurring at each intermediate stage, but overall, the task response is clear, well-supported, and meets all requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction with an overall summary, followed by chronologically sequenced body paragraphs detailing the process. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'After harvesting', 'Next', and 'Finally' are used appropriately to guide the reader smoothly through the sequential steps of the diagram. Paragraphing is handled sufficiently and logically. To move further up the scale, the referencing and transitional links could occasionally be even more seamless, avoiding slightly repetitive sentence openers, but the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic process description, successfully employing less common items such as 'cultivated', 'harvested', 'pulp', and 'amine oxide'. However, there are a few noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher score, such as 'od' instead of 'of', 'filteration' instead of 'filtration', 'stripes' instead of 'strips', and 'manufacctured' instead of 'manufactured'. While these spelling and word-form slips do not impede communication, addressing them and incorporating a slightly wider variety of precise collocations would elevate the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating good control over passive voice constructions which are essential for describing processes, such as 'the bamboo is cut', 'fibers are softened', and 'yarn is then woven'. There are several error-free sentences, showing a decent command of grammar overall. However, a few minor mechanical and grammatical errors persist, including a typo in referencing ('Thes strips' instead of 'These strips') and a slight prepositional or verb form slip ('separated through liquid' instead of 'separated from liquid', and 'ultimately use to make' instead of 'used to make'). These errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication.
