IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram demonstrates how bamboo is used to manufacture fabric.
Overall, the manufacturing process contains several steps through which the bamboo is passed to become fabric. The nine distinct steps include growing and harvesting, filtration, softening the fibres, weaving and final fabric production.
Initiating with the first step which is planting bamboo trees, spring season is choosed that favours the plantation. Usually in autumn, it reaches a certain growth favourable for harvesting. Once harvested, the long stems are bamboo are being cut into tiny strips that are easier to carry and manufacture further. These strips are then crushed to make a liquid pulp with the help of specialized equipments. Afterwards, they are passed through a filtration machine from which long fibres as solid particles are being separated from liquid.
Moreover, after separating the softened fibre from the liquid, they are mixed with water and amine oxide. The product is spinned to make a yarn which is then weaved to make fibre. Finally, the fibre is ready to make clothes and other products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to the final clothing products. However, some aspects of the process are handled unevenly. While the earlier steps are described with relevant details, some parts of the sequence are slightly confused or condensed. For instance, the text mentions that strips are crushed into a liquid pulp and filtered to separate solid fibres from the liquid, but the subsequent reference to mixing with water and amine oxide is slightly misplaced compared to the standard sequence where softening occurs before or during pulping. Nevertheless, an appropriate overall summary is provided in the second sentence, and key stages such as harvesting, cutting, crushing, spinning, and weaving are all reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the initial planting phase through to final production. Information is generally well organized, starting with an introductory overview paragraph followed by detailed body sentences describing the sequential steps. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the process, using transition markers such as 'Initiating with', 'Once harvested', 'These strips are then', and 'Afterwards'. While referencing is mostly clear, paragraphing could be improved by separating the introduction and overview from the detailed process steps into distinct paragraphs, which would elevate the structural clarity of the report to the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, enabling the writer to describe mechanical processes and physical transformations effectively. Terms such as 'manufacture', 'specialized equipments', 'filtration machine', and 'liquid pulp' show a satisfactory attempt to use appropriate terminology. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation, such as using 'choosed' instead of 'chosen', 'stems are bamboo' instead of 'stems of bamboo', and 'spinned' instead of 'spun'. Additionally, 'weaved' is used where 'woven' is more precise, and 'fibre' is occasionally used interchangeably with 'yarn' or 'fabric'. These lexical slips do not impede overall communication but prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and passive constructions such as 'which is planted', 'are being cut', and 'are being separated'. There is reasonable control over punctuation and sentence boundaries. However, there are notable grammatical errors, particularly with passive voice verb forms ('are being cut', 'are being separated') and tense usage ('spring season is choosed that favours'). Subject-verb agreement and article usage also show occasional lapses, such as 'certain growth favourable' and 'the long stems are bamboo'. These errors occur throughout the text but rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the sequential process without significant difficulty.
