IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The flow chart illustrates the different stages of the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.
The initial stage is the plantation phase of bamboo plants. Bamboos are generally planted in Spring for fabric production. The following stage after plantation indicates the harvesting stage. During Autumn, the planted bamboos are harvested from the plantation and taken to the factories so that further processing can be done.
The procedure incorporates 4 stages in order to turn the bamboo into yarn. Firstly, the bamboos are cut into small strips. Besides, those stripes are then made soften by the means of adding water and amine oxide. The next stage is filtration when the longs fibres are separated from the liquid. Again, the long strips need to be crushed leading to formation of the pulp. Consequently, the pulp is made from which yarn is manufactured through spinning process.
The next stage involves weaving which leads to the final goal of making fabric and furthermore creating clothes with the fabrics.
All of these are involved in the manufacturing process of bamboo fabric which is truly a nature friendly innovation and a sustainable source of fabric source indeed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of how bamboo fabric is manufactured, and provides an overview at the end. However, the progression of the steps contains inaccuracies compared to the visual diagram. Specifically, the text states that 'the long strips need to be crushed leading to formation of the pulp' after filtration, whereas crushing the strips into liquid pulp occurs much earlier (step 4), before filtration. Furthermore, the description includes some unnecessary personal commentary and a concluding remark about sustainability that goes beyond reporting the visual data. These mechanical sequencing errors and limited extension of key features keep the task achievement score at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to follow the chronological order of the process diagram. Paragraphs are used to separate the different phases, moving from plantation and harvesting into the middle manufacturing stages. Cohesive devices such as 'The initial stage', 'The following stage', 'Firstly', and 'The next stage' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, referencing and progression are occasionally faulty, such as the abrupt transition in the third paragraph regarding the crushing step, and some cohesive links feel a bit mechanical. This balance of clear logical organisation with occasional mechanical transitions reflects the characteristics of this band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, incorporating terms such as 'manufacturing process', 'plantation phase', 'harvested', 'filtration', 'pulp', and 'spinning process'. There are also successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is accompanied by some word choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'plantation phase of bamboo plants' instead of planting, 'stripes' instead of strips, and 'made soften' instead of softened. Additionally, the phrase 'fabric source source' near the end contains a repetition error. However, these lexical slips and minor inaccuracies do not impede overall communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using relative clauses and prepositional phrases reasonably well (e.g., 'The flow chart illustrates the different stages of the manufacturing process of fabric from bamboo.'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'longs fibres' (pluralisation error inside a noun phrase), 'the pulp is made from which yarn is manufactured' (slightly awkward relative construction), and issues with article usage. Despite these errors, the grammatical structures remain mostly under control, and meaning is rarely obscured, aligning well with the expected performance for this level.
