IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The diagram illustratre how bamboo is processed to produce febric.
Overall, the procedure consists of nine distinct stages, starting with the cultivation of bamboo plants, followed by a series of mechanical and chemical treatment to obtain fibres, and ending with the manufacture of finished febric products.
In the first stage bamboo is planetd in spring and left to grow throughout the summer months. By autumn, the plant have fully grown and are havested manually, typically by cutting the tall stalks at their base. The stems are then cut into strips before being crushed to create liquid pulp. This pulp is then filtered, allowing the long fibre to be separate from the liquid.
Furthermore, the fibre are softened with the addition of water and amine oxide, making them suitable for the futher processing. Once softened, they are spun into yarn, which is woven into the sheets of fabric. In the final stage, this fabric is utilised to produce a range of finished goods, including t-shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all main steps of the bamboo manufacturing process, presenting a clear overview of the nine distinct stages as required for an academic task 1 response. The progression is correctly outlined from the initial planting and harvesting through to the mechanical and chemical treatments, concluding with finished products like t-shirts and socks. However, while all parts of the task are addressed, some steps could be elaborated more fully to reach a higher standard; for instance, the details surrounding the chemical softening process with water and amine oxide could be more fully integrated with the visual data. The selection of main features is generally accurate, but the overall development shows minor limitations in depth, placing this performance right between a fully detailed overview and a more selectively focused one.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the nine steps of the process. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the early cultivation and harvesting stages, and the final manufacturing phases. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In the first stage', and 'Furthermore' are employed to guide the reader smoothly through the sequential data, creating a coherent overall arrangement. While referencing and linking are generally effective, a slightly more flexible use of cohesive patterns could elevate the writing further. Overall, the structural flow of information is well-managed and easy to follow from beginning to end.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an acceptable range for describing a manufacturing process with terms such as 'cultivation', 'manual', 'crushed', and 'filtered'. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'amine oxide' and 'manually', but encounters some noticeable word-form and spelling inaccuracies that slightly detract from precision. Examples of these slips include typos like 'illustratre' and 'febric', alongside minor word-form errors such as 'fibre' instead of 'fibres' and 'planetd'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band score where greater control over less common items and correct spelling is expected.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and time markers effectively to connect the steps of the process. There is a reasonable attempt to vary sentence structures, but some grammatical and mechanical errors persist. Instances of subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the plant have fully grown', and missing plural forms like 'long fibre' and 'the fibre are softened', indicate that control over grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the punctuation is generally acceptable, reflecting a solid foundation with a mix of correct structures and occasional lapses.
