Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram below illustrates how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.I will discuss the details of the process in the body paragraph.
Overall, the process starts from the plantation of a bamboo tree and the end product is the clothes made from the specific fabric.
To begin with, the bamboo tree is planted in spring. Moreover, it is then harvested in autumn when it is fully grown. Furthermore, the bamboo is cut into strips. Next the strips are crushed so that it gives liquid pulp, After that it is filtered, so that the long fibres are fetched from the pulp, those long fibres are bascically used to make clothes, but not yet. Those fibres are then softenend by adding water and amino oxides, then it is spinned into yams and then finally weaved to make a fabric, that are ultimately the clothes, we wear in our daily lives. knowing that, not all fabrics are made from bamboo's fibers, there are various fabrics.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all the main stages of the process diagram, from the initial planting of bamboo in spring to the final creation of clothing items. The overall trend and sequence are identified in the introduction and overview. However, some parts of the process are less developed than others, and the description relies heavily on a direct translation of the diagram steps rather than offering a fully synthesized report. For instance, the transition from extracting long fibres to softening them is somewhat rushed, and extraneous commentary is introduced towards the end, such as 'knowing that, not all fabrics are made from bamboo's fibers'. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present a more extended and fully integrated overview of the process without introducing outside generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement, presenting the stages of the bamboo manufacturing process in a chronological sequence. Basic cohesive devices and transition words are used to guide the reader through the steps, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Next'. However, paragraphing is underdeveloped; the main body of the process is condensed into a single, overly long paragraph that crams multiple steps together with comma splices. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally repetitive or vague, which makes the flow of ideas slightly mechanical. To improve, the writer should divide the process into logical paragraphs based on the natural groupings of the diagram stages and employ a wider, more flexible range of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic actions required by the prompt, such as 'harvest', 'crushed', 'filtered', and 'weaved'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items related to the process, such as 'liquid pulp' and 'amino oxides', but exhibits some inaccuracy in word choice and spelling, writing 'softenend' instead of softened, 'spinned' instead of spun, and 'yams' instead of yarns. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in lexical control at this level. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their range of process-specific vocabulary and ensure accurate word forms and spelling throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive constructions appropriate for a process description, such as 'is planted', 'is harvested', and 'are softened'. However, there are notable grammatical errors and punctuation issues, including comma splices ('Next the strips are crushed so that it gives liquid pulp, After that it is filtered'), pronoun-antecedent agreement errors ('so that the long fibres are fetched from the pulp, those long fibres are bascically used'), and incorrect verb forms. These errors occur with some frequency across the text, although they rarely impede overall communication. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to exercise better control over punctuation, eliminate run-on sentences, and ensure greater accuracy in complex grammatical structures.
