IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The process diagram illustrates the various steps invloved in the process ogf bamboo fabric.

Overall, it is clear that process consists of 9 main stgaes, beginning with cultivation bamboo plants and culminating in final products from bamboo.

Initially, cultivation bammboo in specefic month and harvesting in autumn. Subsequently, the harvested bamboo is cut into thin strips to facilitate further processing, and these strips are then crushed mechanically to form a liquid pulp. After that, the pulp undergoes a thorough filtering process to separate long, usable fibres from the liquid.

Next, the extracted fibres are softened by mixing them with water and amine oxide, a substance that helps enhance their flexibility. Following this treatment, the softened fibres are spun into continuous yarn using specialized spinning equipment. The yarn is then woven on looms to create fabric, which can ultimately be made into a variety of bamboo-fabric products like T-shirts, socks, and other clothing items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to final products. An overview is provided, noting the total number of steps and the overall scope of the process. Key features, such as the mechanical crushing, filtering, softening with water and amine oxide, and final weaving, are accurately reported and compared chronologically. However, some parts of the process are developed more fully than others; for instance, the opening sentences contain some minor omissions and abrupt phrasing regarding the initial months and cultivation. While the essential information is covered and the progression is clear, a higher band requires a more fully developed and flawlessly executed overview of all stages without minor gaps in detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the nine-step process. Information is grouped sensibly into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs that follow the chronological sequence of the diagram. Cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Subsequently', 'After that', 'Next', and 'Following this treatment' are used effectively to guide the reader through the transitions between steps. Paragraphing is managed appropriately, and referencing within sentences remains clear. Although the cohesion is generally smooth, slightly more variety in advanced cohesive structures would be needed to reach the highest bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to manufacturing, such as 'cultivation', 'facility', 'liquid pulp', 'amine oxide', and 'specialized spinning equipment'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, including spelling mistakes like 'invloved' and 'ogf', as well as grammatical forms like 'cultivation bammboo in specefic month' instead of correct noun or verb forms. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the middle range, but they prevent a higher score which requires greater precision and fewer slips in word formation and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and participial phrases, such as 'to facilitate further processing' and 'which can ultimately be made into a variety'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing verbs in 'cultivation bammboo in specefic month and harvesting in autumn' and the fragment 'process consists of 9 main stgaes, beginning with cultivation bamboo plants'. While these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains understandable, the frequency of structural slips and awkward phrasing means the grammar is not consistently accurate enough to reach a higher band.
