IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the nine-stage process of producing bamboo fabric.

Overall, the production is a linear process, beginning with planting bamboo and ending with finished clothes like T-shirts and socks. It includes growing, machanical processing and chemical treatment.

First, bamboo plants are planted in spring and they grow for saveral months until autumn. In autumn, mature bamboo is then harvested. The harvested bamboo is then cut into thin, long strips by cutting machine. Next, these strips are crushed to make liquid pulp. This pulp is felter to separate long fibers from the liquid.

This pulp is filtered thruogh a funnel to separate long fibres from liquid waste. After filtering, water and amine oxide are added to the fibres to soften them and make them suitable for spinning.

The softened fibres are then spun produce yarn. This yarn is woven to make bamboo fabric. Finally, the fabric is used to make clothing products, such as T-shirt and socks, which are eco-friendly and soft.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of the bamboo fabric manufacturing process, from planting to the final clothing products. An effective overview is provided at the beginning, noting that the process is linear and encompasses growing, mechanical processing, and chemical treatment. However, some stages could have been more fully extended; for instance, the transition from spinning to weaving is described very briefly. The key features of the diagram are correctly selected and reported without major omissions, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data. To reach a higher band, the description of certain steps needs to be more thoroughly developed, ensuring an equal depth of coverage across all nine stages of the manufacturing process.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the initial planting stage down to the final garment production. Paragraphing is utilised appropriately to separate the different phases of the process, such as harvesting, processing, and finishing. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the steps, using transition markers like 'First', 'Next', and 'Finally'. Nevertheless, cohesion occasionally feels somewhat mechanical, and there is a noticeable repetition in the middle section where filtering is mentioned twice in close proximity. Referencing is generally clear, but smoother transitions between the sentences in the middle paragraphs would enhance the overall flow and elevate the organizational quality of the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a manufacturing process, including terms such as 'harvested', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', 'spun', and 'woven'. There are, however, a few spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'machanical', 'saveral', and 'felter', along with a minor grammatical slip in word form 'to spun produce'. Attempts are made to use less common vocabulary, but these are occasionally inaccurate and impede precise communication. To improve this criterion, the writer needs to expand their lexical repertoire with more sophisticated, precise terms and carefully proofread to eliminate basic spelling and word-form inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

A mix of simple and complex sentence forms is attempted throughout the response, effectively using passive voice structures such as 'bamboo plants are planted' and 'these strips are crushed'. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('to make T-shirt'), incorrect prepositions ('filtered thruogh'), and a repetition of the verb phrase that creates redundancy. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they persist across the text. A wider variety of complex structures deployed with greater accuracy is needed to progress further, alongside tighter control over articles and prepositions within grammatical patterns.
