IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram outlines the different stages involved in the manufacturing of fabric from bamboo.

Overall, it consists of 9 stages. Intial stages mostly deal with growing bamboo plants in the spring season, middle stages involve cutting and filtering processes, whereas final stages deal with spining crushed strips and this results in the manufacturing of clothes.

Firstly, small bamboo plants were grown in the spring season and are harvested in the autumn season when they grow to certain hieght. Than, with the help of cutter, bamboos are converted into strips. Moving on, two elements known as water and amino oxide are introduced to make the fibres soft. Moreover, by the virtue of filtration, long fibres separates from the liquid.

Additionally, strips are crushed to obtain liquid pulp. Than, by spining, we get yarn, which is weaved to make a fabric. This fabric is than used to make different clothes like shirts and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main stages of how fabric is manufactured from bamboo. The overview correctly identifies that there are nine stages and outlines the general progression from growing to clothing. However, some aspects of the process are slightly confused or under-developed. For instance, the sequence mixes up the order of some steps slightly, as the crushing of strips into liquid pulp (Step 4) and filtration (Step 5) occur out of order in the description compared to the diagram. Furthermore, some details lack extension, keeping the response at a level where ideas are relevant but not fully or accurately elaborated across all steps.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the process logically using paragraphing. The introduction is followed by an overview paragraph, and the steps are broken down into subsequent paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the sequence, such as 'Firstly', 'Moving on', and 'Additionally'. However, cohesion occasionally feels somewhat mechanical, and referencing links between sentences can be slightly repetitive or unskilfully managed, such as the repeated use of 'Than' to signal chronological steps. Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but the logical progression within the body paragraphs occasionally falters due to the sequence errors noted.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms from the prompt such as 'manufacturing', 'spring season', 'harvest', and 'liquid pulp'. There are, however, several spelling and word-form errors that reflect a limited level of control, including 'Intial' for initial, 'hieght' for height, 'Than' for then, 'spining' for spinning, and 'weaved' for woven. Furthermore, 'amino oxide' is used instead of the correct term from the diagram 'amine oxide'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to restrict the score at this level, showing an attempt at less common vocabulary with notable inaccuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and adverbial phrases of time such as 'when they grow to certain hieght'. There are some successful structures, but also a number of grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb tense consistency and articles. For example, the sentence 'small bamboo plants were grown in the spring season and are harvested' shifts inappropriately between past and present tense. Additionally, minor errors occur in prepositions and singular/plural agreement, such as 'long fibres separates' instead of separate. These errors persist throughout the response, though they rarely impede overall communication.
