Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the process by which fabric is produced from bamboo.

Overall, it is evident that the process consists of nine stages, beginning with the growing bamboo plants and culminating in the production of T-shirts and soxes.

The process begins with the growing of the bamboo plants in the spring season. Subsequently, bamboo plants are harvested in the autumn, after this, it is entered into cutting process where bamboo is converted into strips. The fourth satge is to make liquid pulp by crushing strips. Followed by, liquid pulp is entered into separation process where filtered long fibers from liquid. In the next stage, long fibres are added into water and amine oxide to make soft fibres. The seventh stage is the spin process where to make yam, Once this is completed, to make fabric from the weave. In the final stage, with help of the machines, fabric is converted into t-shirts, soxes and other wearable items.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all the main stages of the bamboo manufacturing process, satisfying the requirements for a complete overview. The opening and summary effectively highlight the beginning and end points of the sequence. However, while the key steps are identified, some of the intermediate stages lack clarity and precise detail regarding how the process actually transitions. For instance, the description of how the fibres are softened and separated is somewhat condensed and imprecise compared to the visual diagram. To reach a higher band, the response would need to extend and fully develop the explanation of each individual stage with greater precision and clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression, moving logically through the chronological stages of the process from planting to the final clothing items. Paragraphing is utilised adequately to separate the introduction, overview, and body of the process. Cohesive devices are employed to connect the steps, such as 'Subsequently', 'after this', and 'In the next stage'. However, some of the linking phrases are mechanically structured or slightly awkward, such as 'Followed by, liquid pulp is entered into separation process', which disrupts the natural flow of information. Improving the flexibility and accuracy of cohesive ties would enhance the overall readability.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a technical process, incorporating terms like 'manufacturing', 'process', 'culminating', 'strips', 'liquid pulp', and 'fibres'. Attempts are made to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling, such as 'soxes' instead of socks, 'satge' instead of stage, and awkward phrasing like 'cutting process' and 'separation process'. While these lexical errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect a limited precision that prevents the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing contains a mixture of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and sentence construction is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in verb forms, prepositions, and clause structures, such as 'where filtered long fibers from liquid', 'where to make yam', and 'to make fabric from the weave'. Furthermore, awkward passive and active voice shifts occur, such as 'bamboo plants are harvested... after this, it is entered into cutting process'. These frequent errors in grammar and syntactic patterns cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited range of reliable structures.
