IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how fabric is manufactured from bamboo.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the steps followed to manufacture the fabric from bamboo plant.
Overall, the whole process consists of total nine steps starting from the planting of bamboo plants and ending it with clothes making.
Beginning with the first step, bamboo plants are planted during the spring season and then in the next step, bamboo plants are harvested in autumn season. Subsequently, bamboo are cut into strips with the help of machines in the factories. After that, these strips are crushed to extract liquid pulp which will be filtered from the filter paper to separate long fibres from liquid.
Afterwards, water and amine oxides are mixed together to soften the fibres then it is spin to make yarn. In the next step, the yarn is weaven to make fabric and in the final step, clothes are made from the fabric such as sweater and socks.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main steps in the bamboo manufacturing process, providing a basic overview and outlining the sequence from planting to clothing production. However, the word count falls just short of the minimum requirement, which impacts the overall completeness of the task. While key stages are identified, some details are only partially developed or glossed over, such as the exact transformation steps in the middle and final phases. To reach a higher band, the response would need to ensure it meets the length requirement and offers a slightly more extended, balanced coverage of all visible stages in the diagram without omitting key transitions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression from the initial planting phase through to final product creation. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the stages, using sequencing words such as 'Beginning with', 'Subsequently', 'After that', and 'Afterwards'. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction from the body of the process, though paragraphs could be structured more evenly. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical transitions prevent the text from achieving a more natural flow. To progress further, the writer could employ more sophisticated and varied cohesive patterns rather than relying on standard sequential markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic steps of the manufacturing process with terms like 'manufacture', 'harvested', 'crushed', 'liquid pulp', and 'fibre'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as writing 'total nine steps' instead of a total of nine steps, 'spin' instead of spun, and 'weaven' instead of woven. These lexical inaccuracies reflect a limited range and occasional strain on the reader. To improve, the student should focus on accurate word forms, particularly past participles in passive voice constructions, and incorporate a wider variety of precise, less common vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting passive voice constructions typical of process descriptions. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and article use, such as 'manufacture the fabric from bamboo plant' missing articles, 'then it is spin' containing an incorrect verb form, and agreement slips. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they persist throughout the text and restrict the variety of error-free complex structures. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs greater control over grammatical patterns, particularly passive voice formations and subject-verb agreement.
